Lately, I have often been thinking of how blessed I was. I have a wonderful home, fantastic grown-up kids who can handle their own lives, a supportive husband, I love my job, and have a great team that makes me feel more appreciated than ever before. Looking back, I am sure that this all was (also) a consequence of “letting go and letting God” and gratitude. The more we are grateful for what we have, the less we think about what we lack. After we lost our cat and thought of getting a new one, I thought a lot about beginnings and endings and how different people look at them. Some feel guilty about starting something new after something ended. I often observed this in relationships. My mother-in-law felt guilty about enjoying life after her husband died. She spent 23 years in depression that she caused by her conviction that she does not deserve to be happy and has to grieve for the rest of her life. She thought it was not ok to feel or show joy. That’s why on the one hand, she complained about being lonely but on the other hand, hid in her house, avoiding any company. I totally understand the shock, the missing, and all the struggles that go along with such a loss. It all needs time, and people should take their individual time. What I mean here is that some think they must bury themselves in sadness as an unwritten law.

Shortly after the change of the year, I met an organist at the post office who often accompanies me when I sing at weddings, funerals, or church concerts. However, we hadn’t seen each other for quite a while and started talking about how we both have been. I asked him if he was doing good, and first he reacted stereotypically like: “Yes, I am good.” But then his look changed more seriously, and he added: “You know life happens, which it does for everyone. A couple of weeks ago, Colin of meandray.com mentioned the quote (above) of a young woman called Jane Marczewski in a comment. I remembered that quote and immediately checked YouTube. 30-year-old Jane participated in the show America Got Talent. She had already beat cancer twice. But shortly before she got on stage, she was told that they found cancer in her liver, her lungs, and her spine. She had a two percent chance of surviving. She said: “I have a 2% chance of survival, but two percent is not 0%. 2% is something. And I wish people knew how amazing it is.” And she smiled all over her face. She also said that it is important to her that everyone knows that she is so much more than the bad things that happen to her. Although she had that diagnosis, she appeared so full of life and joy and was literally glowing. You will see it in the video I shared at the end of this post. Sadly, she passed away only a few months later.

I must have been 7 or 8 years old when I sat in the back of our car driving home. I had my hand resting on the armrest of the car door. It was in the 70s, and since there was no smartphone, tablet, or whatever, I was looking out of the window, thinking of everything and nothing when my eyes wandered to my hand. Have you ever had this weird feeling of nervosity? I mean, you wake up in the morning and, for no apparent reason, you are nervous. I recently enjoyed a singing bowl treatment. If you’ve never had one, you wouldn’t believe what it can do to your body and soul. Before the treatment, we always talk about whether I have any specific requests regarding the outcome. I usually tell her to just do what she feels is necessary. I want to keep my head out of it and let happen what needs to happen. But last time, I wanted her to consistently follow up on any blocks she finds. I told her that I am so tired of reflexive resistance arising in me when it comes to ridiculous things and that locks me up inside. This automatic resistance keeps me from expanding, and I’m so tired of working against it, which only causes more resistance. I said I wanted to be transparent and permeable. After the treatment (which was very effective), she said, resistance is not necessarily a bad thing but rather an intuitive reaction to not letting it all in. That got me thinking.

It constantly gives birth to new occasions and possibilities as tools to evolve. Change may not always be welcomed and often it cuts our world apart which we were actually fine with. But “being fine” is rather part of our comfort zone and stagnates our development. If we are not willing to leave our comfort zone then life will “help” us to do so.
