Are You Flowing or Pushing?

At the time, I wrote and scheduled this post, I had a cold that made itself comfortable in my head as a sinusitis. That made concentrating a little difficult. But that’s what inspired me. I should let it flow rather than make such efforts to make my mind present an idea. What a fitting analogy to my sinusitis… I see your point, universe.

My employed job as a compliance officer does not allow overlooking details. I always have to think further and behind documentation of portfolio files, information of our clients, and regulatory (new) requirements. Pushing me to see those details seems to be part of that job. Since I am someone who tends to overthink, wants to be in control, and puts safety first, my pre-conditions seem to be not too bad. However, overthinking is something I actually want to get rid of. I don’t want to dig into criminal expectations either. I am someone who naturally and reflexively expects the good in everyone (even when I get fooled). So, that attitude actually disqualifies me for that job. I have to wear a different hat when working through compliance tasks than when I am me. The funny thing is, when I wear that hat for too long, my head starts to hurt. Let it flow, right?

How often do we get stuck in something that does not go along with our nature? There are positive people who already “smell” when there lingers something incorrect in the background – like my business partner. They don’t overthink – they just let it flow. It flows from them. That is the secret when you are successful at something. Whatever you do, if that is part of you, you are what you do, and that integrates naturally into your actions. If you think you only need to make yourself part of your task, it may be a constant challenge and exertion. That doesn’t mean that even dream jobs can be challenging and stressful at times when too much is coming together, but the activity/task itself will never be the burden.

Maybe overthinking or pushing yourself to be in control has also to do with balancing out a lack of self-esteem. You don’t trust yourself that you can master it – perhaps because what you do is not an internal but an external thing that is never under control anyway. The need to get something under control (to do a good job) causes stress and the fear of overlooking something. However, maybe there is something in us that does flow with the task (just not all-inclusive). Perhaps something we only need some time to get used to the field. But after a while, even if you try to ignore the signs, you feel whether you are growing into it and begin to “flow” with it or if it is a new attempt every time.

Sometimes, we don’t have a variety of choices to pick from. We need to take what seems to work best at that very moment. Also, sometimes, we need to make uncomfortable steps in between to get where we want to be. Sometimes, we need to make compromises since nothing is always roses. Compliance may not be “my thing”. But I have a fantastic work climate and flexibility at my job, and there are a lot of other tasks I am in charge of. So, it works for me when I look at the whole occupation. However, even if many parts of a job look great, one smaller one can overshadow them. We need to listen to ourselves, and if the overall situation is unbearable and even begins to affect our health, we need to act. Maybe a talk suffices, or it shows more and different options. If that doesn’t work, a more dramatic change should be considered and focused on.

Hmm, this post went in a completely different direction than I expected when I started writing it. But that’s OK, no, it’s perfect. And believe it or not, my headache is gone. That tells me clearly that my headache was cause and cure at the same time: It was necessary to cut my mind off and let the information flow that needed to be shared, and by letting everything flow (and stop overthinking), it dissolved.

Overthinking is something I deal with through life. When I can’t surrender and let go to the flow, I am not at peace and struggle both mentally and physically. This was such a powerful statement: “Whatever you do, if that is part of you, you are what you do, and that integrates naturally into your actions.” That hit me square in the gut. Thank you for sharing your thought, Erika!

I think overthinking is one of my biggest tasks to solve too in this lifetime. We are not alone in that anyway.
I am glad that part spoke to you. It is something I have to remind myself often: Do I only do something because I started it once or do I do it because it still lives in and through me? When things begin to stagnate I ask myself that question. Mostly, I only drifted into my rational thinking that is focused on make it all perfectly right but lost the fire on the way.
I hope you flow more and more as time goes by. Life is so much easier that way… but it is difficult to reach that point. Thank you for taking the time for reading and commenting, dear Jan 💖

Isn’t it Magic when we allow ourselves to go with the flow, how at ease we then become… I could so relate to all you spoke of Erika…
Coming from a background in Training and Quality control, needing everything to be just so, in minute detail.. Allowing our own lives to flow takes practice..

And as your business partner you said is in the flow… So his life, and all else flows with it… Trusting in the Flow, putting our faith in things working themselves out, and inner-standing that we are not always in control… That other factors come into play.. And when we trust in the Universe to deliver what is in our best interests, often the best outcomes just slot into place, without us worrying and giving ourselves those headaches..

Loved this post Erika…. Some of my best posts, and poems are when I just allowed my thoughts to flow without overthinking things…
And I am pleased your own headache vanished after writing this piece..

Much love dear Erika… ❤ 🧡💖

I love your words! Live life, let life happen and when it does, see how to use the gifts.
I agree, sometimes when I know I let it flow, I thought “hmm… I don’t know whether that post will turn out well”. However, they turned out the most visited.
Letting it flow, and we do ourselves and everyone a favor. That is when life is allowed to flow too.

Thank you for your lovely words, dear Sue. Much love to you 💖

One day I had had enough of over checking myself in what I do, so I wouldn’t make a mistake and be feeling rejected from some supposed mistake. Spirit said to me…99.99999999 percent won’t ever happen, yet you burn yourself out daily, what is it telling you? So I let go.
Yes, I do still project one or two but only those ‘likely’ to occur. But for you Erika, your job keeps you in that mode, it needs it. I think you should become a flower cutter at one of those big farms with flowers everywhere, it would almost be like a daily meditation and allow you to let go the habit. Mind you, your sinus’s could be a problem in among so much nature 🤣 Great post kind lady, may your heart decide your course and free you from this practical world and share in its true life ❤️🙏

Haha, yes, I am a little allergic to pollen but not that much anymore… I would risk it for being surrounded by flowers all day… hehe.
If we look at the signs around us, our emotions, and our body’s messages, we find out pretty fast that we hold on to something unhealthy. Either we need to change the circumstance or the way we think about it. Life would be much easier if we looked at it with some more distance and therefore more serenity… all lessons to be learned 😊

We can learn to let it flow and not as a sign of resignation but as a sign of confidence and strength. Can we control everything? No, but we can make the most of any situation with the right approach and perspective. I hope you find a boost in each day, have a great week 🌞

What we cannot control is the life we must live to experience what we need to learn and grow from. What we can control may not lead us further. Instead we try to kee thing as they are – but that is not what life is about. Life is constant change and we need to flow with it.
Thank you and I wish you the same!

Hi, Joseph, I do agree. When I was a few decades younger I too, did not question, it was the way it was and I thought, I had to deal with it. Understanding that we are not only allowed to make changes but even shall make them (regardless whether others agree or not) is such a profound insight and change life dramatically.
Thank you so much for stopping by and leaving a comment. Have a good week!
