A couple of weeks ago was my birthday. Among the many congratulations I received was a message from an old friend. A line in it made me pause instantly and got me thinking.
She wrote, “With all my heart, much love and… a huge dose of courage for the new year of life…” – “a huge dose of courage”. I reflexively thought, “Courage for what?” I don’t feel like I have to be courageous about anything. But yes, there are things in my life that challenge me to not back out anymore. But it is not courage. I was surprised to find that the meaning of that word no longer seemed to matter to me. So what kept me going when I faced yet another obstacle to overcome? And there it was: The correct word is “determination”.
It was one of those moments of awareness when I saw clearly how my determination not to let my fears control me anymore led to a significant shift in my perspective on “fear.” Yes, I’m full of fear to jump out of a plane with a parachute. In that case, for example, I would need courage. But when it comes to life situations, I make decisions with determination, not with courage. I realized that I had overstepped that part. If I needed courage, I might still feel deep inside insecure about proceeding with my decision. But with determination, I am clear and focus only on the solution and the goal. As soon as determination replaced courage, fear was no longer the issue. Maybe that is another step in the process: fear, courage, determination!
Wow, that was such a moment of clarity, how far I have come just by continuing my way. And what time would be fitting better than a birthday! What about you? Have you ever had an experience where something inside you had changed in a lasting way, and you only realized it because you were suddenly presented with a direct comparison?

A wonderful post, Erika! We need to get determination which strenghtens us for better life. i had experienced this just the last few years, where sometimes fear acted like a brake. Thanks, and i hope you are enjoying a wonderful weekend! Now not only is the sun visible, but temperatures are finally rising as well. ,-) xx Michael

I think when we recognize that even though we feel insecure in stepping over another particular limitline but do it anyway, because we simply decide to do, regardless a possible fear, we have reached a milestone in our personal development!
Thank you, Michael, you have a great one too!

Your right Erika, there is a rhythm to life. We can step into change for the easy stuff quite well. But if it steps closer to our fears we do need some courage first, then a commitment to do those types of changes. Then there is ‘the’ fear we hold. That takes a little bit more courage, more determination, and a commitment to ourselves like no other. These are the conditions we place on ‘our’ love, and how they affect us.
When I stepped through my fear, after an incredible confrontation of myself…everything changed. I had reached that ‘summit’ of my mountain and everything seemed to be much easier…simply because I had dared that journey. All else seemed to become a walk in the park, so it must have been building that unconditional love within, that part of us where we go beyond the need to be courageous…because we are now already there. The view of things are different…because we have changed so much in each and every commitment we make to ourselves.
Great post kind lady, may we all ever reach our summit and become that change that unconditional love is 🤗❤️🙏

It’s true! You described it very well. Then we’ll be immune to any kind of uncertainty or intimidation. We know exactly where we want to go (and where we don’t want to go anymore), and we won’t take a single step back. Moving forward is the only option. Thank you, Mark. Your comment is another piece that fuels the thought of determination.

Erika, I love your two quotes in banners, but also the story in-between. Determination comes from within. A small in stature person can win a fight with determination. Or, even if they do not, they can gain admiration.
I am reminded of the movie “Cinderella Man” with Russell Crowe playing James Braddock. His career seemed over, but once he healed an injury his determination took him to a title fight against Max Baer, a powerful and dangerous champion. Since he was such an underdog, he was called the “Cinderella Man.” Courage is taking that first step; determination is getting back up after you have been knocked down. Keith

Oh, yes, that is a good example, Keith. Determination can take us more or less everywhere since a powerful energy goes along with it.

That is an amazing bit of clarity and insight, Erika. I can see how this all ties in with the Strength card on my post today. Change is quiet. And it happens subtly (most of the time). Thank you for sharing this moment of enlightenment!

It is stunning again, isn’t it, Jan? So, seeing the tarot card in your post was so empowering and confirming again. We can handle everything, if we are willing to do so! It is not about if we can or can’t, but if we want and do!

Courage to start, determination to continue and fear becomes an afterthought.

Right, determination is the next level, when fear was already unmasked.

Determination is giving a middle finger to whatever appears and defines itself as fear.
