The Pressure of Making Decisions!

I wrote a few times about making decisions. Basically, I believe that whatever decision we make will lead us toward the place in our life we are meant to arrive. It is like using the GPS system in your car. You put in the address but there are several options to reach your destination. We also have this inner GPS which already knows the address. We simply choose the kind of road we walk towards it. Every step and pit stop on that road will give us energy and insights to continue our journey or lead us to shortcuts.

We often feel that it is time for a decision to make. Since I am having a stubborn ego that keeps me from backing out I push and force myself often very hard to decide. I think it is the same not-so-constructive attitude like turning away and postponing decisions. Again, there comes that patience issue and feeling like a coward or like breaking a self-made promise when not pulling it through and moving on.

It is good to be aware when a time of change has arrived and that a decision is about to be made. But it does not always mean that we are supposed to decide right away but to change into an observing position in order to see the whole picture.

The serenity prayer holds a profound truth. It is about that! I agree that not making a decision is also a decision – a passive one. But consciously observing a situation is something completely different. It means we are still sticking with the subject. But other than making any decision only for the sake of deciding (which will lead us towards our destination for sure too) we grant ourselves the privilege of the higher perspective in order to make a decision that possibly even shows us a short-cut while getting the overview and letting things develop in the background. Being an attentive observer makes us act or react in the perfect moment.

When you are an impatient person like me it is a huge challenge to sit and wait because it feels like you might miss out on something or time is running out. But this is not the case. Even a tough decision to make can feel more peaceful when the right moment has arrived instead of forcing it because our mind says so. Yes, in the end, it is not the rational mind that has to give the starting shot but the heart which already knows the straight way toward our destination. In the end, waiting in peaceful awareness makes you arrive faster than making a decision only because your mind pushes you in order to prove to your ego that you are no coward. That way you can avoid a lot of detours and the path itself is smoother. Don’t let the wind blow you anywhere. Check where it comes from and adjust the sails.

Not easy at all. I know that too well. But I also learned how much of a relief it is when you give yourself permission to let things happen or to watch a situation until you feel more centered when you decide to decide! Sometimes it happens quickly and like a reflex and sometimes we need to exit, buy a road map, and go from there.

I think you are right Erika.. That inbuilt guidance system is there with in all of us..
If we all of us connected back to our INNER CORE as in your previous post.. We would see how by following our in built ‘intuition’ our gut tells us what is right..

But again as you said, so many of us get pressured, cornered often into making quick decisions and often we listen Not to ourselves, but are prompted by others to follow what suits them.

So loved your sentence and quote.. .. ” That way you can avoid a lot of detours and the path itself is smoother. Don’t let the wind blow you anywhere. Check where it comes from and adjust the sails.”

We often block our roads by fighting against them.. Resisting the flow… I know there have been times when I have made decisions in my career path for instance, I knew full well were not right.. As the new job went for didn’t Feel right.. Yet I went against my instincts, because my head told me I needed security and an income.. It was the worst ever step I made.. And it was fraught with obstacles including traveling to and from with diversions and road works.. Accidents and breakdowns.. When at last a month later I saw it would never work and handed in my notice.. I drove the 15 mile home for the first time with no hold ups, even the traffic lights were Green LOL.. 🙂
Once that right decision had been made.. I became aligned within the flow again and soon new doors opened.. 🙂

Brilliant post.. Loved the way the wind blew me here.. 🙂

It would be so easy to find the right direction if we only flew with ourselves. But yes, the head is in the way and sometimes it is not easy to differ if it is the head talking or the heart. But then again your gut feeling tells you clearly! I think also that it varies. Sometimes it is the quick decisions and sometimes we need to wait. Again, we need to trust our gut since all situations are unique as we are! Thank you very much for this amazing comment. It is a great example that when it is not our path all signs will show it! And when it is then even a path that looked tough inthe beginning will get straight!

Very well presented Erika. Reminds of The Byrds recording of “Turn,Turn, Turn” (verse 2 below):
To everything, turn, turn, turn.
There is a season, turn, turn, turn.
And a time to every purpose under heaven.
A time to build up, a time to break down.
A time to dance, a time to mourn.
A time to cast away stones.
A time to gather stones together.

Full lyrics (all verses) readily available in the internet. 🙂

Great post, Erika! Decision are not always easy to make, I believe if we can balance the heart and mind perspective then we can make those decisions facing us. As always each individual operates on his or her internal clock.

You said something important here about the own internal clock! I think there are so many things are coming together which define how and when we make a decision. The most important thing is to know what you want before you do anyhting… then it is about deciding WHEN to do it!

Erika, very helpful post. I had a boss send me the serenity prayer, as I occasionally would put on my Don Quixote armor and go fight a windmill. When I would do this to try to save a person from being let go in a downsizing matrix managed company, my boss would say you are not going to change the outcome. My answer in these cases was “I still have to try as I would do for you.”

He was right for the most part. But, it made me feel better to try. Yet, the serenity prayer works well on other matters, to accept what has happened or pick better battles. As a parent, you could often find something critical to say to your kids. The lesson is to don’t. Find your moments to instruct and diminish the moments to criticize. An old boss said praise in public and criticize in private.

This may be off subject, but you triggered a thought pattern. Keith

Those are very thought-provoking points. We can never compare how things would have been if acted differently in the decision process. I think all of it has its eligibility. In the end it will lead us to the same result but just with a different path we walked. Anyway, I absolutely go with you in the “at least I have to try”. Thank you for just going with the flow. I always appreciate you being off subject, Keith… which you aren’t 😊

Well take a decision is never easy unless it is for something that you are really sure you want or not want. There are so many factors involved in taking a decision, Personally I have patience I can wait the right moment to act and get ready for it silently 😉 but sometimes I can relate with you when you feel that the time is running out and missing out something it happens to me too, in that case I calm myself down thinking that time isn’t arrived yet otherwise I will feel it inside me and I will know!!! I guess this is the side of my zodiac sign I am a Libra I can balance 😉 great post Erika but now you made us all thinking that you must have important decisions on your path…;-) ❤

I love that part “otherwise I will feel it inside me”. That is it acutally! Having the serenity to let that moment come and all that comes by then helps to find that moment!
That decision is not on the funny side at all and I will let you guys know when the time has come…

It is funny to see, how different we are as humans and how we act.
I have beeb tha pain for many through my life, because I always say, let me think about it and I will answer…..
While my kids were kids and younger, they often became tired of this reaction. When they asked for something special, I always demanded my time for thinking.

It is a very good idea! Also when emotions are involved it is always better to step back and give yourself time to look at the situation from a distanced place! Oh, and of course I can understand your kids… lol!

Have you ever done a Myers Briggs personality test? It’ll explain why you need to decide and why others can apparently leave decisions so long. It helped me understand why colleagues at work couldn’t help being pains in the arse…!
