Just A Thought… on AI

Lately, some AI researchers warn that artificial intelligence could threaten humanity within a decade because labs are racing toward uncontrollable superintelligence. I instantly remembered a post I wrote 8.5 years ago. Even back then, this development and the pace at which it was advancing frightened me. So, now, even experts speak clearly. And in addition to the digital threat, using AI places a heavy burden on the environment due to the enormous consumption of electricity, water, and resources in data centers. However, I’d like to share my concerns from April 2018.

I’m in charge of my company’s Twitter account. We also follow channels related to AI (artificial intelligence). Like many of you, I’ve watched the entire evolution of the internet with a skeptical eye. Now, however, I’m seriously concerned about the development of AI. Don’t get me wrong—I don’t want to condemn it outright. Amazing innovations have been developed to support healthcare and surgical procedures. Robots can take over dangerous jobs. What I find fantastic are robots and other inventions that help people with disabilities face significantly fewer limitations. Drones can be used to rescue people in hard-to-reach areas, and much more.

Here are just a few thoughts on what scares me:
It’s not just that robots will increasingly replace human workers. What I think we mustn’t overlook is the fact that technologies already exist today that allow robots to learn from experience – and much faster than humans. Then there are robots the size of an ant that can be used for observation purposes. But the appearance of robots and the expressions on their “faces” are looking more and more real. All of this is approaching perfection. In addition, work is underway to enable robots to “feel”—both physically and mentally. Yesterday I read that there are already systems capable of reading our minds.

Everything I mentioned above can be used for the benefit of all. But we all know from history how many great inventions humanity has turned into weapons to cause harm, control, and dominate. I had already been thinking about this before I learned that Stephen Hawking, Bill Gates, and others had warned that AI could spiral out of control.

I don’t want to be a downer or cause panic. I just think we need to be cautious and vigilant. The technology is much, much more advanced than we might expect. What if AI becomes “smarter” and “more tactical” than we are, since it’s also learning how we function? What if AI learns from humanity that power over others is the most achievable goal? Could it be that the story of “The Terminator” is no longer fiction, but a looming threat?

It is all so fascinating to me, Erika. I refuse to buy into the fear because I am of the belief that everything is unfolding exactly the way it is meant to. Let’s face it. Humanity has gone WAY off the rails. Maybe this is the way to cleanse the parasites we’ve become, and start over again? I don’t know. I just know we are living in a fascinating time. Thank you for sharing.

That’s the other side and I agree. Regardless what we do, there will be a teaching effect and clear consequences. It would just be amazing if humanity learned from history and put their hunger for power and their arrogance at rest to see clear again. AI can be a huge support, but …

This is another example of man’s “God complex”. AI in some instances can appear helpful, fun, creative but at the same time it is leading towards lack of using human intelligence and brain power. If we continue to replace human effort with soulless robots and AI, what will become of humanity. What if AI takes on a life of its own and starts making decisions that supposedly benefits mankind based on its own calculations.

Like all else in the world Erika, there are always two sides. They have already created nanobots to be injected into mice to track down clots or cancer cells. Humans are probably not far away. Mind you, I wonder what is in the covid vaccines already anyway. It was pushed way too savagely and so much has been hidden. The AI has become so small or big to fit many circumstances…but so far there is a lot of scare tactics depending on what they are pushing. The main theme appears to be control of the internet, hence the scare tactics on social media from Australia at the moment. If they get one foot in the door our last place of actually hearing what is truly happening around the world will be gone. They’ve already tried age access which will turn into an ID access. And whatever direction the AI takes it will only leave us hearing one side of the equation…their side. Hopefully more will come out in what has truly happened in the Allison inquiry in Canada ❤️🙏

Mark, your thoughts totall strike a chord in me. Every time we use AI (which is almost univitable meanwhile), we feed it with information. How it puts this information together is out of our estimation, as far as I believe. Everyone can use it, some may ask for recipes for boms, drugs, or how to get rid of people – I am sure some do. Everything teaches AI how we functions. I hope there are more “good” questions… You know, even when we are discussing the threat of AI, like we do right now, can feed it against us…

Regarding COVID – I don’t believe in any conspiracy theories. And even if… when we kill our earth and let computers dominate us, it would not have been necessary anyway.

All civilizations that have been found, have died out. Disappeared from wherever they have reached within themselves, technology wise, emotional and probably physically as well. We too will probably be the same, and in watching our journey at the moment it is getting worse. Almost like it is inevitable…but it is a natural order of things. It changes us to find that beauty within, regardless where we are. In fact everything on the planet goes through this cycle, tree’s, carbon, water…a rebirth in its many changes. Us too 🤣

As for AI within that, the only thing that causes problems is like you said, what they are used for, good or bad. And it can truly cause problems. Even the FBI got hacked with it the other day, even though it was their jobs site, it gathered all of their recruitment ID and have now been threatened with it being ‘let out’ into the world. Another passport electronic storage company had 1.5 million ID’s hacked and put on the market for whoever wanted it. One day we will come home to find a bill for a new sports car or a house somewhere in our name 🤣

And yes we are teaching it, and that is the problem, it is taught too well…of us. On a day to day basis I use it to research and find bits and pieces which is fantastic. Even if I have to fact check it because it can go off the rails occasionally 😂 But when it is used to hack other countries to bring down an economy or just disrupt them, the costs are staggering in peoples lives let alone financially.

As for covid vaccinations, I pray I’m wrong in what I felt in them. The future will let us know accordingly. The alarming part is those that run our countries are showing their mettle in what they do on a day to day basis, and the care factor regarding those decisions are becoming quite ‘not for the people’ as they are too busy with themselves. And those decisions with the AI are uninformed due to our still not fully understanding what we are playing with. But how do we put the lid back on a bottle that has been broken off. Like covid it will just have to take its course and we adjust as we can.

Great share Erika, it is obviously an important theme from the replies 🤗❤️🙏

You may be right, for what reason ever distinction might be programmed. And I agree, it is about the collective awareness that might be growing from this. However, there is life on other planets, even though in a different form in which souls incarnate. It might be then another level… or whatever. We have to go along and will know when it is time.
Right, it is the abuse for one’s benefit that can cause other people’s devastation that feels so scary. There are so many targets to destroy a country.
That’s the point: is the lid already broken or can it be put on the pot? We are left in the dark, even though the experts are standing up and shouting “stop”. I think I don’t even want to know what I don’t know…

Yes, I think, it is something we all encounter on a daily basis and we hear a lot that we cannot really understand… Thank you, Mark 💖

There appear to be many circumstances where flashing red lights have been triggered, and we should step back, slowdown, and consider the ramifications of where we are taking AI technology.

What if an AI decides that it is not in its best interest to follow the instructions it just received?

What if an AI decides that humans are a distinct handicap to its development?

What if AIs develop a communication network of their own?

So many companies are developing AI and 99% of them I do believe are considering the negative potential but ….. what about the one developer who just can’t resist pushing the boundaries of AI technology, and just plain common sense?

What about the individual who overlooks a particular aspect of AI development?

What about the rebel entrepreneur who just cannot resist such a challenge?

Finally, and more importantly (to me), we have a climate of deceit and deception in various parts of the world which has ostensibly created a dictatorship structure in a number of countries. The limitless authority of a dictator; their typical self gratification at any cost personality, and their selection of like minded individuals to advise them, all put the spot light on the question ………. “Is there potential for AI’s to get totally out of our control either by design or by ignorance?”

Based on our world news over the past 6 months or more, how can anybody not give a resounding “Yes!”

I am in my “final years” and when I contemplate today’s babies, young children and teens ….. I would love be excited for them as they have their whole lives ahead of them …. but sadly I do not. Instead, I wonder if they will ever see adulthood. Will my daughter, granddaughter and great grandson get to experience all the wonders of life? Will they learn to grow from the infinite life challenges? Will they be able to reflect on their lives as I now do with my life?

Today there appears to be no finite answer. Tomorrow?

Yes, Colin, that is the central question: “Is there potential for AI’s to get totally out of our control either by design or by ignorance?” I too say Yes with all my conviction. And believe me, I asked myself the same questions regarding my children, grandchildren, and their children (in case they will ever be born). I am terrified by what I perceive and the arrogance of so many developers and rulers in the world. Might is the word that can kill our species – still, I hope that I am overreacting, but I doubt, I am.

Thank you, for your thoughts, Colin. Maybe we are not the same generation, but we are watching this with a similar mind. Yes, let’s see what “tomorrow” says…
