When I started my new job two years ago, I felt pretty unsure and nervous every day because it was a completely new field. Everyone knew I needed time to get up to speed, but my perfectionism put me under a lot of pressure. No one expected me to come here and do a job I’d never done before—except myself.
All my life, I’ve been afraid of new things because I always thought I wasn’t good enough or smart enough to understand them quickly enough. While that never stopped me from trying something new, it was a challenge for me every single time. I was afraid of appearing incompetent and of feeling like I couldn’t live up to people’s expectations. I realized that, for the reasons mentioned above, I had unconsciously built up resistance to everything new I encountered. I know very well how I function, but it took quite a while before I had largely overcome my perfectionism. As soon as I allowed myself to engage with the learning process, I no longer felt the need to be perfect. Letting go of resistance took away my fear and allowed me to settle in more smoothly. I understood things more quickly and more sustainably. I found confirmation that the more I knew, the more comfortable I felt. Acquiring knowledge gave me a sense of security and serenity. So I shifted my reflex from (unconscious) “resistance” to (conscious) “desire.” With everything new I’ve encountered since then, there’s only one goal: to gather knowledge!
New responsibilities, changing circumstances, or finding yourself at a crossroads can be overwhelming at first. But it all comes down to the mindset. Why are some people so successful? Not because they were afraid to do something they’d never done before, but because they were full of drive and determination to take action and do what was necessary. Fear of the unknown can paralyze our thinking and affect our whole system. It can cause us to withdraw and leads to isolation, which only feeds the fear. Only because we don’t know something yet doesn’t mean we can’t learn. By overcoming that thought pattern (and fear is nothing but a thought pattern), the world opens up to us. Everything we thought was impossible becomes achievable. Nothing at all is impossible – Nothing!

Oh, my goodness. I only wish you had written and published this when WordPress launched the Block Editor, Erika. So many have left WordPress because they feared the Block Editor. They feared the unknown, which only fed the fear that followed. I still see it written in comments all over WordPress, although much less now.
I’ll admit I used to fear change and let it rule. And what was it that helped me conquer that fear? Telling myself that I, too, could use the Block editor, like many others already were. I gave it time. Now I rule change.

Oh, I forgot about that since it has become such common use. However, that’s a very good practical example, Hugh! Thank you!

Once you dig in and become more familiar with the task or tasks at hand all uncertainty tends to dissolve away.

Definitely! The fear that may be there in the beginning is only the pressure we make ourselves when we think we already need to know everything.

As you said look back at when you first started and how it developed from there.

Erika, good piece. I love these few lines:
”As soon as I allowed myself to engage with the learning process, I no longer felt the need to be perfect. Letting go of resistance took away my fear and allowed me to settle in more smoothly. I understood things more quickly and more sustainably.”

Thank you, Keith! That was the key insight. The more you grant yourself being imperfect, but wanting to become better, the less you put yourself under pressure and the more you are free to let the new knowledge enter.

That’s the point, we must remember: Nobody is perfect. And those who think they are might even learn that too! Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Beth!

I love this, Erika! Yes, we are all learning. The more gentle we can be with ourselves, the more we will grow. Many Blessings, Lisa xoxo

That’s so well said: being gentle and patient with ourselves makes us focus on the matter, not on trying to arrive before we even started. Thank you, Lisa 💖

That’s all it needs, and we are allowed to be patient with ourselves until we “know” enough. It is such a liberating thought 💖

It is an amazing thing to see myself stumble, all from those expectations on myself of which you spoke. I found it easier to realise nobody can ‘know’ something until they’ve tried, experience is that understanding. Great post Erika, may we all take a deep breath and dare to try 🤗❤️🙏

Exactly, Mark, we are so good in putting ourselves under pressure only because we believe we must know but can’t. It is truly liberating and calming to realize that no one knows until they begin to learn. Thank you, Mark, yes, let’s take that step in faith and start a new adventure with joy and enthusiasm💖
