Bregenz – Austria

Last Sunday we went to Bregenz. Bregenz is the capital of the western federal state of Austria. It is located at Lake Constance. The most famous attraction is the biggest lake stage in the world. During the summertime, huge opera productions are performed on that stage. In 1994 I was blessed to see the opera Nabucco. Do you remember the Jame Bond movie A Quantum Solace? It was a different setting but it was the stage in Bregenz. And btw. other than shown in the movie Bregenz doesn’t have an airport… that was a fake!

After visiting the stage, the lake promenade, and the harbor we went a little through the older part of the city and then had a ride with the areal ropeway up to the Pfänder. That’s the mountain above Bregenz where we enjoyed a spectacular view over the lake.

There is something very special about that place: It is called the Three Country Corner. That’s why Switzerland, Austria, and Germany are coming together at Bregenz and sharing Lake Constance.

Now enjoy some impressions:

This year the opera Turandot will be played on this stage.20150524_115605_resized

In the background, you see the festival hall. When the weather is too bad, the opera takes place there for specific tickets. We also saw the show Shadowland and the Rocky Horror Picture Show there.20150524_121037_resized

You can see the river Rhine in the center and the left side of the picture. On the left side, the region is called the Rhine Valley. That is where Liechtenstein is located. Everything is very close together.20150524_130953_resized

The left side of the lake is Switzerland and the right side is Germany. Austria only has the eastern peak of the lake.20150524_131504_resized

Do you see the stream in the middle of the picture? This is where the river Rhine flows into the lake.20150524_131514_resized

Up here they have bird of prey demonstrations. But there was none yesterday. There also is a wildlife zoo with deer, ibex, and other animals living in the alps. I was astonished at how tame the groundhogs were.20150524_141603_resized
