A few weeks ago, Mark and I had a discussion at one of my Daily Kind Quotes that inspired me to write this post. It was this part that triggered something in me: “we have broken us”. I thought about how the process of physical pain and healing is similar to inner pain and its healing.
Over time – years or even decades – we begin to build a shell around us made of beliefs, experiences, and decisions that we put in context to each other. Also, we try to protect ourselves from others touching our sore spots. The shell becomes thicker, and we lose more and more touch with that part of ourselves that still lives behind it. Against better judgment, we disconnect ourselves from our own wisdom, which is the reason why we cannot heal. Because what we need to heal lies beyond the shell. The longer it takes and the thicker the shell grows, the more effort and pain may be necessary to break through it again. Since we don’t know that there is more or because we forgot what is behind that shell, we tend to ignore the signs that would lead us to healing. Some even think everything is so hard because others don’t conform to their attitude. So, they try to break them and adjust them to their needs to feel better. But that doesn’t work. Instead, the frustration only grows since no one can run from themselves. Everyone needs to break their own shell to heal and find peace.
As Mark said: “we have broken us, and we have dared to go into its path and heal it”. When this moment comes, when everything seems to break down around us, or when we think that whatever we believed in runs like sand through our fingers, then we feel broken. We are down on our knees and maybe at our lowest point. But that is only the pain that goes along with breaking that shell – even though we are not aware of it at that moment. It is exhausting, and we are called to create a different view since the old one no longer works. That is when healing begins to take place.
If we want to break a nut to get to its tasty kernel, we need to make an effort. We know that there is something fantastic behind that nutshell, which makes it worth the effort. The problem with our own shell is that we have built it up so successfully thick that we think there is nothing behind it anymore, or at least nothing worthwhile. We may think the shell is the end. Although there is this feeling that there is more, the mind says there isn’t. That is why we feel like prisoners in ourselves sometimes. Just as the blue sky is not the end of the universe, the shell is not the end of ourselves, even though we can neither grasp the whole universe nor our own depth. We need to break to reach into our own universe and let our light dawn again.
Cracking ourselves is painful, but also the most healing measure.
Behind the shell is that part of us that makes us feel alive.
Behind that shell lies who we really are.
Don’t be afraid to start that journey.
Through pain we were born – through pain, we renew ourselves.

It truly is like this. Maybe for real change it has to cost you something, the pain is that payment sometimes

I agree! Sometimes we can only break our armor by accepting how things are and daring to look ahead… and that is pain to go through.

I think the pain is to ask us to appreciate what we have gone through kind sir, to show our hearts a much deeper love than life normally does. But to reach it, is something words can barely touch. It is a place we can only truly understand, and allow us to become something much more because of it. The truth of that love is in what we endure in its path, what it meant to us within it, and what we become because of it ❤️🙏

This is the best re-framing of pain that I have seen, Erika. It transcends the contradiction of pain and growth and brings the two together.–through pain we grow. Well done.

Hi, Terry! It is amazing how you conveied that. It makes me think of a lobster that grows out of its shell or a caterpillar that breaks its cocoon. It is strenuous, exhausting, and maybe painful. But it is necessary because we grew bigger than the shell we wore (when even it was only a construct of thoughts and beliefs that needs to be reassambled).
Thank you so much for stopping by and leaving such an inspiring comment.

This is very ingishtful – a real paradox of life that in order to get better we have to break.

Isn’t it crazy? But once we understand the principle it makes complete sense.

Cracking the shell may take a lot of effort but it is worth it to mend our brokenness and to remember our worth. Excellent post ☺️

When it begins to hurt, we might be pretty close to a breakthrough! Thank you very much, Sylvester!

Erika, well done. I love the quote “It’s not forgetting that heals, it’s remembering.” After one of greatest college basketball coaches lost an early in his career season ending game 109 – 66, an alumnus toasted the end of the season by saying “Here’s to forgetting tonight’s game. “ The coach corrected him, “Here’s to remembering tonight’s game.” Keith

Very good example, Keith! I think, only when we understand that, we understand what the past is for – to learn and not to suffer from it!

That is a very beautiful post Erika, and thank you for the quote. But your words touch every part of us, and that journey within to finally reach a place only found in that breaking.
That growth is found in everything, many stages of maturing and gaining its wisdom each time we break through into something more. Like that flower you spoke of in another post. To reach that openness, reach that beauty, takes much time and growth. Sometimes watered, sometimes without, sometimes sun, sometimes not. Trying to reach that place to break through those petal wrappings and bloom. Each an understanding until we dare to step into that which we seek. Break through our own limits like the flower does to reach that love and happiness we always yearn for.
Great post kind lady, this definitely needs to live in your next book. Thank you for sharing 🤗❤️🙏

Hmm, thanks for that hint, Mark. That is something to remember when I am retired. That is on my agenda then (when even it still takes a few years… lol).
As I said, before, no one finds words like you to describe the process so vividly. Indeed, it is triggered and provoked by so many different and maybe even opposing things. And as you said, we reach what we seek. Something surprises me especially every time again. Sometimes we reach something and only when we reached it we recognize that we were seeking it. That is always such a proof that we are always on track, when even unconsciously! Life – however it is defined – is amazing!
Thank you, Mark 💖

Thank you Erika. It is those moments where we ‘touch’ something and finally perceive its truth. That wisdom expanding each experience we go through. It is indeed teaching us well 🤗❤️🙏

This is such a powerful post. We tend to shy away from pain or from hard things that make us uncomfortable. Yet, by doing so, we cheat ourselves out of something much more wonderful than we can imagine. I think of the ‘breaking’ as shadow work. Shadows can be scary until they are illuminated. Thank you for sharing!

I think we have to break the shell to drain what makes us ill and begin to heal

I agree, Beth! It may hurt and be strenuous, but in the end, it is only a process of liberation.

This is so good. Breaking through the shell is so necessary, but we have to give ourselves grace and time as we work through the breaking.

You are so right, Joseph. We need a lot of patience with ourselves and that too is part of the healing process in which we learn to love and appreciate ourslelves. Thank you very much, Joseph!
