About 3 weeks ago, something happened that I want to share with you today. It is almost unbelievable to me how this all worked out in our favor. Some of you know that I have a tortoise. He has been with me for more than 40 years. For the warm season, he lives outside in his enclosure in our backyard. He gets food from the nearby meadow or “hunts” slugs. Also, I don’t need to clean anything in his natural environment. So, he is totally easygoing. But… he has a strong tendency to escape.
Since he is stubborn and enduring, he has no problem working on a plan for hours. He would find the only rotten slat in the fence and push against it until it gave way. For hours, he would try climbing small branches next to the fence and slide over it. He even managed to climb his hut and slip over the wooden fence (we still don’t know how he got up there, but we once watched him sitting on the rooftop). The problem is that he gets pretty far in only 30 minutes, so you don’t know where to start searching. He can hide under bushes, in the high meadows around our house, or even in our neighbor’s garden across the road. It’s like looking for a needle in a haystack. And he has become really good. After his latest successful attempt, he did not even leave a single trace.
The miracle is that we always found him, or someone found him before we even noticed that he went off again. We have been really lucky so far. But after he escaped three weeks ago, I thought that was it. We won’t see him anymore. When I wanted to make sure he was safe in his hut from a nearby thunderstorm, I noticed he was gone. It was already pouring like crazy, and after a few minutes, we got some hail, too, while my son and I were still looking for Herkules. He was not in our (big) garden anymore, that was clear. It started hailing again, but even stronger with the biggest hailstones we have had over here. We ran into the house and needed to wait until the worst was over. Then the search went on, and I went into the high grass of the cow meadow next to us, walking it stripwise, always slipping with my feet over the ground to feel if he was there. People who watched us came to help. After about an hour searching, one of the helpers called me. Someone from a house way up on the steep hill called out to us what we were searching for. They said, while they wanted to make sure everything was safe from the hail, they found a tortoise in their garden. I ran up there, and indeed, it was our Herkules.
We have seen bigger ones in Italy, but not over here.
This is now what amazes me: How many “coincidences” had to come together to make this mini chance happen to find him? Because of the thunderstorm, I noticed he was gone. Because of the hail, the people up on the hill went outside. Because of perfect timing, he was sitting there when the lady almost stumbled over him. I would have never considered searching for him up there. The only thing that comes to my mind is that he is simply such a precious being who deserves a good life in a safe environment and to be cared for well. And/or he shows us how precious he must be and how lucky we are to have him. I don’t know what it is, but I am endlessly thankful to see the Universe caring about the smallest creatures.

I believe his work on this earth is not yet done, Erika. That’s why you (or somebody else) keeps finding him. He has more work to do. And like the rest of us, we don’t know what that work is until after it happens.

That’s so wonderfully expressed, Hugh. I thought about this too or he gave us a lesson that might be still working in the background. At least, it made me see again, that we cannot take anything for granted and must enjoy the moment. He showed this in mild ways 💖

As a kid, I had a 3 legged tortoise as a pet. Called it Speedy. Speedy would escape the garden regularly and it was staggering how far he could get.

Haha, you guys should get together and compare notes. Here I was thinking they were quiet gentle darlings 😂

You are right, Mark. I bet we could exchange a lot of tortois experiences 😄

It’s so crazy, it must be in their nature. I must say you named your tortoise perfectly. And I bet one leg less did not make a difference. They are so much faster than most people think. Don’t watch them for 10 minutes and they are gone!
It is amazing too that you found Speedy every time again. How old did Speedy get?

Now i know why he got his name. Lol I think you should install a survaillance system or at least a GPS sender. 😉 We are considering to do this with our new cat. Thanks for sharing this interesting and also very funny story, Erika! Conincidences are the fundation our world is built on. Best wishes, Michael

Now there’s an idea, a gps tracker. Pick him up in an instant, worry gone. Good idea Michael 🤗❤️🙏

As I said to Michael. Our cats have those and our son made that point. But we had to glue it to his shell, which I feel is cruel.

Hmm, as his shell expands in growth it may break the ‘contact’ too. Maybe a tiny drilled hole and a cable tie. That is a bit of a conundrum Erika. The only other thing I can suggest is to take him for a walk in a new area every day to ‘remove’ that urge to wander. Do they sell turtle leads? 🤣

When my mom found him on the street in front of our house, he had a hole in his shell that looked like someone had put him on a chain or leash. It looked awful and I felt sorry for the little guy. Today I know that when there is something that holds him back, he tries even more to get rid of it. So, he would rather risk to hurt himself than giving in.
Meanwhile we made a his enclosure a high security prison… let’s see when he let’s us know where to improve it again… lol

Ooh, that’s not good about the hole in the shell then. I was thinking about a tracker attachment, not a chain to a post somewhere. Maybe that’s why he is so determined after a life with a post. He’s a determined little soul isn’t he. Maybe a sundeck with deck chair, someone waving a fan to cool him off, drinks, nice food…or…a nice lady friend to distract him 🤣

I just gave him a cool shower 😄Actually he has a wonderful place: a tree that provides shade all day long, bushes to hide, grassland, a hut, a tortoise swimmingpool and waterplace… still, his mission seems to be to overcoming boundaries 😂

You sure he’s not human? We have this thing with boundaries, maybe he IS very close to his ‘mum’ 🤣

Don’t laugh, we talked about that tracker, which our cats have.
Thank you, Michael, this story proves again to me that there are no coincedences in this world. So much came together that cannot just be a lucky chance. There is something bigger behind it that keeps our lives on track. An amazing feeling. Enjoy your new cat, Michael!

You say it: a series of miracles! That nails it! Thank you so much, Jan. Still, I can hardly believe that he appeared again.

I am so glad you found him, safe and sound. Plus he had to live through the hail storm. Yikes!

Oh, yes, he was so lucky that the hailstorm did not hurt him. We all were lucky that all conditions worked together to bring him back home. Thank you, Darlene 💖

Erika, great story and context. A very apt name as well. Thanks for sharing the travels and travails of Herkules. I am certain he would also defeat Aesop’s hare. Keith

Haha, yes, that name is program 😂Oh, right, that could possible be. Herkules simply does his thing without caring what others do 😄

He definitely keeps you on your toes with his great escapes. I’m glad all the connecting points were put in place ahead of his escape in order for you to find him again. 🐢

Are you sure his name isn’t Houdini Erika? A determined lad I must say, and the distance he covered I’m wondering if he can jog 🤣 And by the sound of that hailstorm I bet he was glad he had his home with him too 😂
Glad that it ended well kind lady, and yes a miracle that brought everything together as it did. Mmm…but maybe his determination may be just a little lady he can hear calling out up in the neighbourhood somewhere 🤗❤️🙏

Gosh, that buddy doubled my heartbeat quite a few times 😅 I have no idea what this all wants me to say, but it does tell me that miracles are happening. In my opinion, this was a major miracle to me.
Hmm, who knows… I just ask myself how they would know about each other 😂

More miracles Erika, nature has her ways 😂 Thanks for sharing kind lady, maybe its just that ‘what’s over there?’ that we all seem to have 🤗
