What is Purpose?

purpose

I am sure that is a question each one of us is asking at times. Perhaps every day. Sometimes we are questioning if our job or what we are used to to for years is part of our purpose since it doesn’t feel what we think a purpose is supposed to feel: fulfilling, joyful, successful!

When I was 32 years of age and pregnant with my third child I was in a state of questioning my life. I was impatient with my kids, wanted to be perfect and stressed myself in proving how much I get done. But I still thought it is not enough. There must be something else that makes me feel important and worthwhile. I was taught all life long, that I am only someone when I show accomplishments. I did not question that, because after 25 or more years of hearing that I believed it. I was rewarded for success and experienced critics, ignorance or indignity when I “failed” or did not suffice in the eyes of my closer surrounding. This believe of always trying to get something big and visible done set me under pressure. In my eyes being a mom and taking care of my loved ones wasn’t enough. That’s nothing special. That’s something I have to do next to the important things in life. I am having tears in my eyes when I realize today how I was thinking about the treasure and this enormous responsibility of having a wonderful family.

During that time I visited a medium. One of my questions was: What is my purpose? The answer came right away: You are in the middle of it! It is sad, but honestly I did not know what to make out of it. I expected to hear where I have to go to, what to start or what will be coming up! But I did not feel that I am in the middle of my purpose. What I am doing now was just something that had to be done until I am free again for the important things. Again, today I feel sorry for the person I was at that time.

We are not only having one purpose. There is no purpose more important than another one. In whatever situation we are in, in whatever state of life we are in, everything has its own purpose in it. Purpose is not only a big thing which we call the purpose of life like being a doctor, inventing things, managing stars. Yes, those are wonderful purposes. But purpose actually is, what you are about to do. At this moment for me it is, to write this post. It is to bake a cake for your kid’s birthday party. It is to mow the loan or to drink a glass of water. It is to say: I love you!

Purpose is, to consciously be in the moment, concentrated on what you are doing right now. There is a wonderful children’s book called The Three Questions. It is based on a story by Leo Tolstoy and I’d love you to read it. The questions are “When is the best time to do things? Who is the most important one? What is the right thing to do?” The answers are: Now! The one you are with! To do good things to the one standing at your side!

Those three answers describe in a short but perfect way what purpose is about. Repeat the answers and feel how they are flowing directly to your heart. Whenever you feel something like that you are on purpose.

Yes, absolutely! Struggling with the past and fearing the future keeps from enjoying and creating the present moment, which is the only moment we have. Thanks for your comment and thank you for following me. I’ll check out your blog, you look like a person who likes to smile!
