#JustAQuote – Mastering

I wasn’t sure what to write about today. I chose the first quote (the one above) I found on the internet as my inspiration. Oh, and what a quote! I know that I will digress here, but this is what comes to my mind due to the current circumstances in this world. So, here are some short thoughts, and I wonder what comes to your mind.

Decades ago, and unfortunately, for the past years again, we have experienced in grand style what it means to master others. I am talking about leaders of several states, but also about company owners (e.g., Amazon, Tesla, …). Still, the most popular tool is mastering by spreading fear, threats, and insecurity. These days, it is harder to get there, one would think, since more people use their brains and common sense. Lies and incompetence are more easily seen through. Unfortunately, AI, conspiracy theories, and a lack of education support bad intentions to rule over others. So, it still works when particular individuals receive enough support (power) around them. If you fear something, you will do what’s necessary to avoid the imagined or threatened consequences. Or if you get promised heaven on earth and don’t question it, you will follow.

So this is control over others. However, a person can only be mastered if they are unable to master themselves. People who can master themselves and their fears are steadfast within themselves. If they cannot accept being mastered to a certain extent, they will not follow. They may even oppose the regime, risking cruel consequences. Their power is so much stronger and purer than any intimidation could ever be.

So, that is a profound statement, Gary! I think becoming a leader is a natural development. But desiring it is probably always connected to mastring others. If they would not step over that little but important part of mastering themselves they might even silence their desire. I would love to quote you, since I have your general permission. Thanks a lot for that!

Erika, great post. I love this quote in particular:

”People who can master themselves and their fears are steadfast within themselves.”

Steadfast is a terrific word. This is like a superpower to shake off people playing your fears.

I agree, Keith. Steadfastness is a superpower. It makes you independent of anything others say about or think of you. Those are clear within themselves and understood that they don’t have to prove anything to anyone but see their responsibility for themselves and everything/-one around them.

Erika, the best example is a common one today. I am not alone in being steadfast in the belief the US president is highly untruthful and unreliable. A long term care facility executive director was lauded in 2020 for having zero COVID cases. How did he do it? When he heard Trump say not to worry, he started worrying. Keith

I can hardly master myself, Erika, so I don’t try to master others. For those who thnk they have mastered it all, good luck! Many succumb to the pressure of living and choose the easy way out. I understand. Life can be hard. Making it is challenging enough, let alone mastering it. Thanks for sharing.

I am completely with you, Terry. Who am I to master others when I am not even able to master myself? But many others, who cannot master themselves, begin to master others as a sign of desperation and a way of filling that lack in themselves. But as we know that never works in the long run.

Thanks a lot for your comment, Terry!

So true Erika, until we do master ourselves, only then will we feel true freedom. Fear is ‘their’ tool of trade in politics but what they don’t realize is…if you corner an animal and it is truly scared, in that fear it will lash out. It will bite the hand that supposedly feeds it, and can inflict permanent damage. And then they will wonder why. Greed has blinkers and because of what they only ‘want’ to see, the damage goes on.

Great post kind lady, and an interesting thought…why don’t we ever see any altruism in anyone going for an election. Or are they too ‘soft’ and are hit from every direction in the deceit and hardness of politics 🤗❤️🙏

Oh, yes, good point. You can master others only up to a certain degree until that bubble pops and people “bite back”.

Good questions, Mark. Altruism no longer seems to be in vogue when it comes to being elected to office – not worldwide, but in too many (powerful) countries.

Thank you for your thoughts on this, Mark 😊

If you can be authentically you then no one can master you. The world is in a state of flux and it appears there is nothing to rein in those who are trying to master others (dictators and tyrannical leaders).

A thought-provoking post, Erika. Just think what a change it would create if everyone stopped supporting and giving energy to these power-hungry so-called leaders. It would take a concerted effort, but I’ve always thought it could be done if enough like-minded people joined together. Thank you for this thought.

I believe exactly the same, Jan. Even speaking against them is energy we grant them. That reminds me of a saying we have here: “Imagine if they declared war and no one went.” That is steadfastness in unity without fighting anything.

I could write a book in response to this Post Erika as there are so many scenarios and so many perspectives to consider however, I am going to keep it simple while still (hopefully) doing justice to your quote and thoughts.

The US presents a situation mirrored in varying degrees by many countries, in that the leaders make many promises in order to get elected. The promises will benefit the average voter and will cost enormous amounts of money ….. and yet rarely does one hear the question “Where is the money coming from?” or “Who is going to pay for these promises?”.

The reason to me goes back to the education system. It would likely be unreasonable to incorporate a program detailing the operations of the various levels of government, but at least include a basic primer so “average voter” has a perspective. Perhaps include it as an extension of the Math curriculum because, in its simplest form, “do the math” is a comment which would be very appropriate here.

Even the concept of “balancing the books” would be invaluable to “average voter”. Then when they get excited about a politician promising to increase the minimum wage, they can ask “What is that going to cost, and where will that cost come from?” When they get excited about their local Government agreeing to invest a huge amount of money into the local economy, they must acknowledge the very strong potential they will be contributing to it one way or another.

Even at a personal financial level, I know so many people who do not understand the realities of borrowing money and the resulting interest. “Cumulative interest” is a term which often generates a blank look as a response.

Perhaps if the education system was revised to give a basic understanding of finances at a personal level, then it would not be a giant leap of logic to then relate this same understanding to finances at a Government level and if that could be achieved …… then more questions could be asked, and promises may well be made with a little more caution.

I have to acknowledge that a multiple party system of Government is intended to ensure that common sense prevails, simply by providing opportunities for policies etc. to be challenged. However, while the ruling party is going to make promises which are designed to ensure their political future, the opposition parties are going try and influence a change of Government, and all this can be done without considering the real impact of “average voter”.

Sadly the political rhetoric rarely reflects the realities of a given situation simply because its goal is to influence in order to meet Party goals and, unless “average voter” has the tools to constructively review such rhetoric, then nothing is likely to change. The education system seems to be designed to produce a collective that simply either trusts their politicians, or resigns itself to a subordinate role in life.

Just some thoughts! 🙂

You’re striking a chord, Colin. That is what we are often talking about. Some leaders try to keep the education level low to make people follow them blindly. Severak studies show how people with different education levels votes more likely for this or that party, this or that person. If more money was invested in education, that “majority” of voters might be lost since they don’t even realize how important education is.

I am working at a company that is strongly connected to Slovakia. One of my Slovak co-workers told me, what I had heard often after reunification in Eastern Europe. Freedom was amazing for a moment. But then they had to learn how to take care for themselves. Many wished they had the old times back. Not because they had everything, but they had what they needed and they did not have to take responsibility for it. Those dictators could rule their people easily since they could not flee the system and did not know how to survive.

Education is the magic word indeed, Colin. Thank you so much for your long and important comment!

A fascinating response Erika. I had not considered those countries in which the citizens have no say in Govt. decisions and yes, it probably would be quite a shock to suddenly be confronted with the reality that you now have a responsibility for your own future. Regards. Colin.

Just imagine, each family was allocated an apartment and a car. They didn’t have much money, but life was cheap with modest choices and there was always enough. There was no unemployment. Everyone got a job without having to make any effort. Everything was taken care of.

That sounds about as idyllic as a democratic system, and I guess both concepts have merit on condition that the decision makers are not egotistical self-serving groups. It would seem to me that democracy would not have too many issues if the decision makers took their national responsibilities seriously, and socialism could work rather well under the same conditions. Both systems are likely to collapse however if the “people” suffer because of an irresponsible hierarchy of government.

I never looked at it that way. You are right. Both systems work well for the people unless the leaderships abuse their powers. That’s food for thought. Thanks Colin!

I have often expressed a rather unpopular view that a dictatorship is the perfect system! I still stand by that belief simply because the “checks and balances” of a democracy tend to water-down ideas by the ruling party such that progress, if any, tends to be very slow. In contrast, a dictator can implement whatever he/she wants.

The proviso for this theory however, is that the dictator must be sufficiently educated to separate fantasy from reality; must be unscrupulously honest, and totally dedicated to the interests of the people. Those qualifications, sadly, suggest that it can never happen …. but the theory seems good! 🙂

Indeed, the theory sounds good! As you said, it needed some important preconditons of that person in the lead to make it a win for everyone. Unfortunately, a dictator (as far as I experienced it in my life) wants that “job” for power reasons and ruling over people – not to make sure they are safe and have everything they need.
But yes, democracy slows processes down, expecialy due to the fact that not only one opinion matters but all!

However, I understand where you come from. So, it is very interesting to think about it that way.
