Noble ideas (like world peace, equality, respect, saving the planet) can be corrupted by the growing opinion they are the only truth or solution.
For example, one may believe that the world needs more respect. That person can become so fixated on their idea that they try to convince everyone around them of their truth. That can rise to the level of fanaticism. Once they are at that point, they don’t accept any other point of view or anything that does not go along with their conviction. So, instead of bringing more respect into the world, they even lose respect from anyone who doesn’t share their opinion.
The same thing happens with peace in this world. If we become fanatic, we don’t tolerate any opinion that differs from ours. I think I don’t even need to mention that what we achieve that way is anything but peace.
As long as I believe that my opinion and my belief are the only correct opinion and belief, I don’t only work against my virtues but arrogate to deprive others of their free will. I only see my perspective, ignoring that they have their own conviction as I do. That way, the noblest of ideas becomes another issue if we don’t respect that people are allowed to believe what they choose to believe. Maybe this is even the biggest issue that keeps us from reaching higher collective goals, but we dig ourselves deeper into the mud we throw at others.
I don’t say: Only care about your own business. Oh, no, not at all! (OK, some things are none of our business at all. They only disturb us because of our own inner conflict.) But everyone has a point of view due to their history. And others are the same convinced about their perception and truth as I may be. So, only if we detach from the idea of having the only solution for something we set the table, we all need to sit around and develop a bigger picture of the issue and solution. We need to talk to each other and WANT to understand where the other one comes from.
Again, we need to be what we want to see.
If we do, we loosen attachments that keep us from reaching our noble goals,
but make us see ways of getting closer.
