Maybe you know this. You have a plan that is still in your drawer or a dream that nudges you from time to time. Although the idea of living that dream brings you joy, the thought of realizing it brings you back down to earth. The reasons can be money, circumstances, self-doubt, or fear in various forms.
The funny thing is that what we want the most also scares us the most when we think of it coming true. Because we know that it involves partly dramatic changes and a lot of unknown factors. Yes, fear is actually the major and most tenacious obstacle that stands in the way. Those fears can lead to excuses for explaining why it cannot be done. Because the origin of those fears is another fear: the fear of not taking responsibility for ourselves. So, we need to find someone or something to blame because it must not be our fault.
But sometimes, we are not even aware that we are making excuses. It took me almost 40 years to understand that I am the master of my life. I was so used to conforming, to walk the path I was told would be the right one. I was so trained to follow family traditions that I did not even consider I was allowed to break out of the life I was living. The foundation was the fear of being questioned since I was unable to stand tall through such conversations. When you have almost no self-esteem, it is not easy to face them. Often, I looked jealously towards those who seemed to go for their visions lightheartedly, untroubled, and successfully. They just do it. They are strong, they are straight, and they don’t fear discussions (or even provoke them). They can do it, because they are that way, and I am not.
It took me 39 years to realize that no one can do anything about it if I think differently, talk differently, have a different opinion, and do something in a way no one in the family has ever done before. I understood that my life is my choice since I am the one who is dealing with the consequences. So, why deal with consequences that are not even my choice? That moment was THE turning point in my life. Understanding this on such a deep level, seeing that I lived a misunderstanding for all my life, resulted in another big step in overcoming my fears: I shared this insight in a book. I was not telling a fictional story; I was talking about deep insights that often you cannot even prove. Nevertheless, I did it. So, on the one hand, I achieved my dream to publish a book, and on the other hand, I overcame my fear of sharing my point of view, regardless of what others may think of it. From that moment on, I promised myself that whatever makes me find excuses for not doing it, I will go for it. Because what I fear is something that is not in alignment with my being.
I don’t want to say that everything needs to be done that someone fears. For example, I cannot imagine ever going paragliding or jumping out of a plane with a parachute on my back. I am too afraid. But those have never been a dream of mine. I fear it, but I don’t care.
There is a saying: “Do one thing every day that makes you happy.” There is another one: “Do one thing every day that scares you.” Both go along so well with each other because if you step over your fear and do something that scared you, it gives you freedom. It makes you proud of yourself and builds up your knowledge and self-esteem that you can become or achieve everything you want. So, if you do one thing every day that scares you, it will make you happy.
Never forget: Don’t fight your fears – overcome them.

Oh, yes, we are masters at putting obstacles in our own way. And we only realize it in hindsight.

Fear comes to us in so many forms and yes, sometimes it is self generated. We can face it, dissect it and then overcome it. Thanks for the inspiring post!

An incredible post Erika, it touches so much inside us all in so many ways. There is a place inside us that is waiting for us to stand tall and become our wishes instead of others fears. And after a lifetime of following their trail it can be hard to make that change…but in doing so a new path opens and a love we haven’t touched before will beckon us to something that ever seemed to elude us. That love and happiness we ever looked for out there, has begun to call us back inside and dare us to become it, and appreciate those choices made.
Beautifully spoken and shared Erika, as only that love found can do. Thank you 😀❤️🙏

I think, when we begin following our dreams with determination in the clear awareness that it is part of our life’s journey, those dreams help us to re-discover the love inside of us and re-align with it. All we need to know, all the tools we need already lie within us and our dreams are signposts to walk the path 💖

Excellent Post Erika. Below is a link to an AGT video of a song called “Daydream”. Hopefully it plays wherever you are as the song lyrics fit here so perfectly. Regards. Colin.

Colin, it played, and it will play on in me for quite a while. This song sums it all up and of course, the story around it and the future story after it add to it. Wow! I really hope that everyone on my blog watches this video. Thank you so much for sharing. “Don’t give up on your daydream, when even it scares the hell out of you… When it makes you nervous it might be worth it…” Power lyrics!

You and I share the same amount of years of unknowing that we are the master of our reality. 40 years and now, 5 years later, absolutely everything in my life has shifted. Love is the cure, the power, the hope, the belief, the truth that fuels my faith in all ❤️ There’s always another way of seeing things and of living. Change is possible!! Big love to you sister ❤️❤️❤️

There is a movie you might love: “The Moses Code”. I found it on YouTube:
I watched it many years ago. I am unsure whether it was mentioned there or somewhere else but the age of 40 has transformational energy. It is a time when we spiritually look differently at ourselves. It is when many get into a midlife crisis or wake up. A new awareness begins to break through. So, I am not surprised you had your big change in life at that age.
Much Love to you, my dear soul sister 💖

Indeed, this is true 🥰🌈 In 2020, I wrote a post called, “My mid-life Renaissance”. We have awakened and seen the Light ✨️ Now we direct others inward, upward and onward🙌💓

Yes 40 is significant, or rather late 30s/early 40s. This time frame is considered to be when we “realise our mortality” i.e. It suddenly hits us just how vulnerable we are. Up to that age, we live as if life will go on forever and bad things always happen to somebody else (the reason why countries initially conscript the younger age range to fight for them). Realising our mortality is acknowledging that we can die. What greater motivation to follow a dream or two could there possibly be!

Maybe that is one of the reasons. Yes, that can likely be when I think back. I did not think of me going towards the end of my days. But yes, I thought, if I would die tomorrow can I say that I lived my life? I thought: Do I really want to go on living a life that is not my own? I want to make somthing of MY years. and don’t want to lose any time. So, yes, I agree, We become aware that if we want to make our life OUR life we need to start right away! Thanks for adding this, Colin!

There must surely be nothing more disheartening than knowing that you are approaching your life’s end (either through sickness or simple aging), and realising that there was so much you did not do.
Imagine recognizing the futility of “I wish I had … (whatever)” at the time when it is no longer possible?

That is something I promised myself in the moment I realized it: I never want to look back and regret what I did not at least try only because I was afraid. I think it is the worst since it cannot be reversed or, as you said, no longer possible!

Let’s keep “spreading the word”! Even if a goal is not achieved, the experience will always be beneficial. I am a great believer that falling short of a desired goal is simply an opportunity to learn, and learning more is always a successful and productive use of our time. Have a wonderful day Erika. 🙂

Exactly, Colin. That’s why I like to say, we don’t fail, we make experiences. And we can only make them when we are not afraid of the outcome. Thank you, Colin, and you have a lovely day too!
