I have often thought about this, I know many of us do it, whether the soul or the ego speaks to me in specific situations. Especially when we find ourselves in complicated and challenging life situations or facing important decisions, it can become even more difficult to distinguish between the voice of the ego and the voice of the soul. You want something badly and feel the urge to pursue it. But is it your ego pride that drives you, or is it the flame of your soul that you feel burning? Is it the wisdom of your soul that wants to save you from a painful detour, or is it the ego that does not want you to follow and fulfill your soul’s calling?
Even the ego can make us feel strong in its convincing way. But that’s it: it has to convince because there is always skepticism and doubt when the ego’s construct falters. The louder the roar, the more likely it is the ego. It wants to drown out the calm, loving voice of the soul at all costs. It fears for its existence otherwise. If we understand the power of our soul and connect with it unfiltered, then the ego has lost its right to exist. The soul does not cry out because it does not need to be afraid. It can never lose. Its existence is never in danger. It is the basis of our existence, of our existence at all. The ego is a trained personality that can only exist in the physical world. The soul does not need a physical world to live. It IS the life.
The light of the stars is only reflected in calm waters
Oriental Proverb
The voice of your soul is never demanding, never urging. It lets you wander through the overgrown thicket of your mind. It knows that you need your time to prepare for the next step and that pushing will only keep you from breaking through. That time gives you the chance to calm the water so you can see through the surface. The ego is the restlessness that creates a disturbance on the surface, that you can’t see anything underneath, even though it’s there.
The many influences in our younger years have created a distorted image on which we have built our worldview. Later, slowly we begin to realize that many things are not as they appear. We consider that we are not what others told us we were and what we thought we were. So the ego keeps us from seeing clearly. But it is the ego that shows us the way back to the Self. By overcoming and disarming the ego, we find the way back to the true Self. By understanding who we are not, we realize who we really are.
“True freedom means freeing oneself from the dictates of the ego and its accompanying emotions.”
Matthieu Ricard
The ego is not your enemy. It is part of the being you are today. Therefore, it is not a matter of condemning the ego, but of recognizing it. To do that, we need to understand it and its purpose. As with everything, we get a chance to understand only when we are willing to understand. If we deny the ego, we deny a part of ourselves that will become one of those dark corners we refuse to look at. But only because I don’t look at it doesn’t mean it is not there. In fact, it works unconsciously in the background like one of those demons. That means we need to accept ourselves and make peace with the person we are, including the ego. That pulls its sting – because peace is the voice of the soul.
The ego is not an enemy,
but a teacher that never tires to challenge us.
It is a powerful tool for developing awareness.
You created it and you can disempower it.

Beautifully written Erika, it is indeed the path to find what is beyond it. Without it we wouldn’t understand our place within it. And I love ‘So the ego keeps us from seeing clearly. But it is the ego that shows us the way back to the Self. By overcoming and disarming the ego, we find the way back to the true Self. By understanding who we are not, we realize who we really are.’. This is exactly like all of our emotions, one cannot understand and appreciate happiness without also experiencing sadness too, and on through all those emotions. They are all lovingly wrapped between the ego and the soul to guide us onward. I can’t wait till your next book. What mountain did you say you were meditating on? I think the air is indeed clear up there. Well done to touch something so profound on that journey within…beyond that conductor called ego 😀 ❤️ 🙏🏽 🦋

Your words add so much meaning to the topic, Mark. Thank you! It is in embracing and not in separating that we find peace, that we put all our parts together. The ego is part of the person we are today like our soul is. So, if we ignore the ego we ignore a part of ourselves that tries to show us what is not in balance. And ignoring itself can be gain the ego talking.
I love how you said that all is lovingly wrapped between the ego and the soul. I think that says it all. Because as you said, it is in the oppositions that we remember, realize of recognize the path to the soul and the soul itself.
Thank you so much for you always so lovely words, Mark. I hope that the time to finish my next book will come this year… still hoping… lol

Awesome on that last statement especially!! The ego, when used as a tool, is our friend. Just like a rock. If we use it to raise to greater heights, it is also our friend!!

That is a great comparison. When you look at it that way, you can use everything for you instead of against you. Again, it is in either seeing a solution for every problem or a problem in every solution. Thank you, Annette.

The ego is self driven, dependant on a material/physical world and the soul is selfless. Once we come into this awareness and find a healthy balance, we can navigate this life much better. Have a very good week ahead, Erika 🌞

Very many thanks, Erika, for having us shown the difference between ego and soul:)

I think this is only the tip of the iceberg. There is so much more to say about the interaction of both. It was important to me to make aware that the ego has its purpose too which, in the end, leads us to the awareness that it is not the way. Thank you so much, for your comment, Martina 😊

A most interesting and thought-filled post, Erika. I love the Ego Vs. Soul breakdown. When you really look at it, it’s not that hard to distinguish the voices, but it does require stillness. Love this so much!

You made a good point there: it needs stillness. In our world of fast development and competition, it is already a big insight to break out of that circle or at least know, that the world we live in is not the world to which we have to adapt. Already that raises above the ego. Thank you very much, Jan!

Great Post Erika.Particularly liked the “Ego vs Soul” quote. It would be interesting to expand this area of dialogue to cover the association of Ego and Soul with Self-Esteem and Pride?
I remember being interviewed for a volunteer position in a group interview format, and the question was asked (of us prospective volunteers) … “What are you expecting to get out of volunteering here?” Those who said “Nothing. I just want to volunteer” were declined on the basis that they were not sufficiently in touch with themselves to be of service to others in this particular area of work. I see this as going back to your “Ego vs Soul”, and my suggested “Self-Esteem and Pride” relationship. If one does not understand oneself, it is not possible to effectively understand others. Again …great Post.

This is a very good extension of the theme. It is the mental level, so to speak, that corresponds with this. I completely see the point. I understand the comparison to volunteering. It is true, there needs to be commitment for such a “job”. It is important to be what you do, to fulfill it as it is needed. You need to feel the value and joy of serving.
Thank you very much for this insightful comment, Colin. I will make a note for sequel post regarding pride vs. self-esteem. I like the idea a lot!

Ego and soul; we all have both.
It’s up to is which of the two becomes dominant in our lives. 💜

Yes, exactly, Sis. It is to learn which wolfe to feed. The awareness of the soul’s power and might comes by identifying the ego and its filter. Thank you very much, Sis 💖

Erika, interesting post. We all have an ego, yet to me, what means we have matured is when we know everything is not about us. Some folks, who can be called narcissists, never learn this important truth. Keith

I love this so much what you said here. It reminds me again of rule #6: “Don’t take yourself so damn serious.” A narcissit never even understands what that means since it is not in their program. I think it needs tough lessons for those to get an idea of it. Thank you, Keith!
