Impressioni di Locarno – Orselina

As you can tell from my absence, there is no dull moment in my life. But thank God, these days it is also because of our trips to beautiful places in the neighboring country, Switzerland. Last Tuesday we went to the city of Locarno at the beautiful Lago Maggiore. Locarno is a city in the canton of Ticino that is touching the Italian border. In that Swiss canton, people are speaking Italian. In Switzerland four languages are spoken: The biggest part of Switzerland speaks German, the western cantons speak French, the big southern canton Ticino speaks Italian, and there is a little minority in one a big eastern canton that speaks Rhaeto-Romanic. But let’s start the tour with some photos of the ride to Locarno.

First we visited Castello Visconteo.

Next was the Chiesa di San Francesco. I thought it was interesting to see the wall paintings inside the church. They have not been completely restored, but instead, those parts which are still in good condition are well maintained. It must have been a very colorful church.

Of course, we could not go to Locarno without walking through the little streets, the Grande Piazza, and then along the lakeside.

It was a hot day, and the weather was simply gorgeous. Temperatures between 90 and 100 are not unusual anymore in our area and even less in the southern parts of Switzerland. You can guess what comes next: A stop at a gelateria at the Piazza Grande and enjoyed some ice cream creation instead of lunch.

We walked back to the car to reach our next stop further up on the hill to visit the beautiful Chesa Madonna Del Sasso.

From that gorgeous church, we went to the ropeway that brought us up to Cardada at 1340 m/4396 ft. After looking down from over 4000 m last week, this was only a little “jump”, but the view from up there down to the lake was absolutely breathtaking again.

It was a wonderful day and the weather was totally on our side. Because right after the ride back with the ropeway dark clouds gathered everywhere around us. However, once we are in an Italian area we wanted to have a real Italian pizza for dinner and so we stopped at a pizzeria. It was soooooo good!!

Yes, the thunderstorm caught us later on the way back home. But it was not as bad as we heard some other areas in Switzerland were hitten. So, we had the perfect day!!

It is so cool, living next to a country which is so versatile in its landscapes but also in the variety of its languages. You drive 2 1/2 hours and you truly feel like being on vacation.

That church on that higher place is a jewel. I was surprised by the condition. It is taken very good care of it. And of course, the view from up there is stunning! You are so right, what a blessing to have the opportunity to simply go there.

Oh, wow, yes it can be pretty cool at that time of the year. I was in Bern on Oct. 30 the same year and it was so warm that my son and I could sit outisde having lunch and we needed to take off our jackets.

Right now, it is definitely difficult and not a good idea to travel that far. We did not even go to Greece. But this here won’t last forever and then we will enjoy the newfound freedom even more. Take care too and stay healthy, Holly 💖

That is an amazing area Ericka, the views just go on and on. And I’m so in love with those beautiful images inside the churches. I would love to see it after the restoration. And the second place was magnificent, I thought you had walked into the Sistine Chappel it was that amazing.
If you sit in any church like that, how do you focus on the service? I would be sidetracked all over the place, it is so beautiful 😀 ❤️ 🙏🏽 🦋

Such breathtaking views, aren’t they? I could not stop taking pictures and staring at the horizon and the beautiful scenery.
I don’t think they will restore the rest of the wall paintings. It looked like they simply take good care and preserved what is still existing.
I totally agree. I would always check out every detail of that beautiful artwork. Also, it was a good feeling in that church. Very friendly and welcoming. I don’t have that feeling in every church I visit. But this one felt like a really healing place where God’s love has been shared genuinely. 😊🙏

Ah, a sensitive soul are you. To ‘feel’ welcome is a very heartfelt beauty indeed dear lady ❤️ 🙏🏽 🦋
And a pity about the artwork, they ‘felt’ very loved in their creation. But I suppose that is the difficult part, there are no copies laying around somewhere to restore from 😀

Exactly, I am sure, there are artists which could restore those paintings. But the idea was for sure to only show what was and the beauty that has lingered. They did not want to “destroy” the original by completing it artificially. What you see is the original.
Regarding the feeling inside churches. The most loving feeling I had in a church in the Mission San Juan Capistrano in SoCal. It is a church inside that mission which radiates so much love, comfort, power, and spiritual guidance.😊

I have no doubt God has come down to that church and is ‘touching’ its heart unconditionally, which in turn does the same to all who enter. It must be an amazing place dear lady ❤️ 🙏🏽 🦋

I am happy you feel that way. That’s a bit of what I hoped I could achieve with these posts too for those who cannot realize their original plans for their holidays.

When I grew up in the area, I took it all for granted and did never think of it as something special. But over the years and seein quite a lot of this world, I never cherished it more than today. I am happy you enjoyed it. I love the Italian flair and the Italian feeling. Hopefully, I can get to Italy too soon again!
