I am in charge of the Twitter account of my company. We are also following AI (Artificial Intelligence) channels. Like many of you, I observed the whole internet progress with raised eyebrows. But meanwhile, I am seriously concerned about the development of AI. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to blame it in general. There are great things invented to support the health system and surgeries. Dangerous work can be done by robots. What I think is fantastic are robots or other inventions which help disabled people to have much fewer restrictions. Drones can be sent to rescue people in difficult areas, and much more.
Just a few thoughts here what scares me:
It is not only that robots are about to replace workers more and more. What I think we mustn’t overlook is the fact that already today technologies exist which make robots learn from experience – much faster than humans. Then there are robots of the size of ants which can be released for observations. But there is also a big improvement of the look of robots and the mimic of their “faces”. This all is coming to perfection. People also work on developments which enable robots to “feel” – physically and mentally. Yesterday, I read that there are already systems which can read our brains/thoughts.
All of what I mentioned above can be used for the benefit of everyone. But we all know by history how many great inventions mankind turned into weapons to harm, control, and dominate. I have been pondering about this all before I learned that Steven Hawkins, Bill Gates, and others warned of AI getting out of control.

I don’t want to be a downer here nor do I want to spread panic. I simply think we need to be cautious and attentive. Technology is much much further than we may expect.

Suppose we are the AI of our creators, and they realized we needed to be contained here as were were a danger to their well being … doesn’t history repeat itself?

Wow, interesting thought indeed!
Yes, that’s what I am concerned of. The ideas and tools change… but not the attitude. Hopefully we are all wrong!

I consent, Erika! It would be nice, our officials would inform uns better about these things, and not only use them for military purposes first. Michael

Right! There are great purposes this all could be used for but… and more open information would truly support the trust!

AI scares me, Erika. As is the case of history, mankind will use AI for the dark. Does no one remember or think of Atlantis that was destroyed because of technology? There are a lot of conflicting emotions I feel …. and many of them are on the same line as what Stephan Hawkins said. 😱

When I heard Stephen Hawkins saying this all I was even more scared because he was into this all more than most people. So, what you said here is exactly how I feel too, Amy! I am scared and seriously concerned.

This was a much needed article, Erika. It has now pushed me to go deeper in the subject and ponder over all the possibilities and probabilities. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you, Idle! I am very glad when this post could sensitize a few in this matter. I believe it is more serious than we might expect. Check out the Twitter accounts regarding AI. The videos are very “thought-provoking”.

I think it is more important to think where this can lead to than ever before. Thank you very much, Julie. I think we all see the blessing and the danger in it!

The continuing evolution of AI can be intimidating. Hopefully in the direction of a more helpful nature for mankind. Thank for sharing this interesting post, Erika.

Yes, let’s not lose hope that everything is handled in a reasonable way and only for the sake of everyone. Just this self-learning processes appear to me that they can get out of control faster than we might think. Thank you very much!

You’re welcome. Science and works of fiction may be truer than we believe in some cases.

I think exactly the same. We have no idea what has already been created and developed .

I think you have every right to be concerned, as our species has a history of self-serving at the expense of others. Whereas one perspective will take advantage of research to produce a more efficient/overall better/healthier standard of living, there always seems to be the opposite perspective which simply sees research as a means to secure power by any means necessary. Anybody who is critical of your position here, should understand the huge difference between being negative, and being realistic. History clearly dictates that we should all be concerned. That is simply being realistic.

Colin, I am very thankful for your comment. This is exactly what I mean. I am not negative but realistic and I am sorry to say this, but I don’t trust. After I wrote this post I did not know whether to publish it or not. I know that the opinions are so different. But only looking at what possibilities drones already have is not funny anymore! As I said, it could be such a blessing but therefore EVERYBODY had to work on this with an attitude of love…

When we acknowledge how a wooden stick went from being a hunting weapon to one of aggression; how a steel knife, and subsequent firearm went from survival hunting to aggressive killing; how the steam engine automated manufacturing, and was later developed to power warships; how the internal combustion engine revolutionized road transport, and was also used to power military vehicles and (more recently) how splitting the atom was a forerunner to extremely economical generation of electricity, and became a nuclear bomb in 1945.
We should all be concerned because not only can a computer program (i.e. robot) now be configured to analyze, learn and adapt, but it can do it at a much faster speed than the human brain. Imagine if an enterprising robot determined that humans were the “weak link” in their world?

You summed it all up here. That’s the core of what I am actually thinking of. What if machines are developing themselves through self-learning programs to even take over? A scenario where they know humans better than we know the machines, where machines are more intelligent than humans and even read our brains… this is all no science fiction anymore. Meanwhile “Skynet” is more realistic than fictive.

I wonder if the teens/early 20’s of today see it like that …. or am I (and to a lesser degree you) just not adapting too well to the fast rate of progress? From my perspective, and reflecting on the world over the past 50-60 years, it is very difficult to not have some degree of skepticism about the future.

I don’t think so. Those young people have grown up with modern technology and are motivated to bring it all to “perfection”.
Yes, I agree. It all develops so much faster. It is hard to catch up with the progress and therefore “normal” people like us lose the overview which too increases the skepticism.

Oooh ……… I’ve never been called “normal” before. Thank you Erika. 🙂

One must wonder where technology will take us. I would be surprised if AI is not in the near future. I really don’t like that idea.
