And they don’t notice what they can damage. Mostly, the bad news are the preferred ones. However, positive journalism can achieve so good much too!

a power we assign to them

You are right. In the end it is in our hands what we accept and what we don’t accept. But some words have the ability to slip like water through a tiny crack into our inner world before we notice. However, that is a hint that we have to check why that happened… self-development.

Sometimes they sink deeper than we realize in the beginning – in both directions.

This is so true. Words can Cause more harm.than people realise.

Exactly, Sis! Not even meant to hurt someone but such words can weigh even heavier.

I was chatting to a parent about this just this morning. Her little 5 year old didn’t want to come in because, in her words, ‘I don’t know how to learn”. Now, we would never say that to a child in school. Instead, we really push growth mindset, and the idea that if you can’t do something right now, that doesn’t mean forever, it means you can’t do something yet. Then we have another go, and again, and again in a different way, if need be.
I had to reiterate to the parent that if she is hearing people saying negative things about her learning capabitlity at home, too, and multiple times, it will eventually hurt her actual capabilities as she becomes fixed with the idea that she can’t do something, rather than being hopeful that it will just tale a little time and effort…

I see the point completely. Repeat the negative “affirmation” a few times, and the child begins to believe it and sees itself from that point. As you said, the goal is to motivate children to collect knowledge they don’t have yet. I like how you explain it to the kids. Let’s hope, she can change her mindset with the help of her parents and teachers.
Just another question that interests me. Are kids of 5 years already going to school in the UK? Sounds early to me. Over here we have two years of kindergarten (beginning age 4/5) to prepare them for school. The enter first grade in the school year they turn 7. So, there is only playful preparation before but no real “school” learning. The systems are so different that’s why I wonder.

It’s kinda complex but we have the EYFS, the Early years, and the last of those years is the academic year the child turns 5, which is the class I teach. Some of the children are not 5 until August, when we have finished the year! That is the first offical year of school called Reception. Children are required to be in a school, legally, that year. The National Curriculim starts in Year 1 which is the next academic year, so they are 5-6.
I know it feels so early, and even though we are doing more exploeration based learning and playing, there is so much structure for the little ones.
I know in Finland my nephews didn’t start formal schooling until 7, and they went to their pre school before that.
It is a much better way of doing things, but that is what the Education system dictates here!
I don’t like when we have to get our little ines ‘school ready’ so early, when their development is not at the right stage to do so much expected of them. Their hands are still not developed enough to hold pencils correctly, and attention spans are so little, yet we have these expectations!

Thank you very much for explaining. So, you have a difficult job welcoming the little students for their first actual school year. I can imagine that it can be exhausting when even so fulfilling.
It sounds we are closer to the finnish system regarding the scheduling of the pre-school and school. But Finnland is known for its good school system which is often overwhelming kids over here from the 6th grade on. There is so much pressure regarding what’s demanded from them regarding self-responsibility, and achievement. I saw the big difference between myself and then those of my kids who went to the same school. But that pressure might build up everywhere, I guess. This world is developing so fast and the competition becomes harder and harder.

There is a lot still to be learned by Britain, about education, i tell you!

It seems to tell from Gary’s experiences with his authistic son. It is a shame. Sadly, Britain is not the only country that needs improvement in this matter. I am sure there have already been (groups of) people/experts to make aware of it. Hopefully the voices don’t get silenced but more join in. Our children are the future for this poor world.

right, and so many people give no thought to it, of those who do, some use them as a weapon, others use them as comfort

You make a good point here regarding excuses and weapons, Beth. When only having oneself in mind, words can damage so much.

That they do Erika. And they are all built on love…even if sometimes built from the ‘conditional’ variety. But even more profoundly, the love within them can see us, to teach, guide and bring understanding. Even in the pain they can cause.
I still shake my head at a meeting of souls, where a few words spoken, or sometimes none, can touch the hearts of all, in many different ways…all from those same words.
Great post kind lady, and well written. May they ever show us that love 🤗❤️🙏

The most painful things provide the biggest potential for growth. No one would choose it, but when they happen and are aware of their purpose, we may be able do deal better or at least sooner with them. Thanks, Mark 💖
