About ten days ago, we turned on the Christmas lights around the house. Every year, this is a moment I wait for impatiently. At this time of year, these lights do something to me – and I mean Christmas lights in general. They make me smile, bring back the child in me, take me back to cozy and soothing December evenings when the kids were little, or remind me of lovely times at Christmas markets.
In summary: They warm my heart and support it to open up.
But why are we lightening (more) candles as part of our indoor decoration although we all have electric light? Is it just because of a tradition that so many only follow blindly? Is it because it looks nice, or because we want to feel the child in us again? Christmas is the celebration of light itself. To me, it is a reminder that the light has come to the earth and that it is here. Maybe I am too little Christian meanwhile, but I see those lights not (only) as the birth of Jesus. I see it as a reminder that the light has come down here through each one of us. Every one of us is a little bulb or a candle that can eliminate the darkness and bring joy to others’ hearts. In the end, it is not the lights, but my open heart, that gives me that wonderful feeling I don’t want to miss.
These lights are visible reminders that the light has always been there through each and every soul that walks this earth. If we can feel this warmth when we look at the lights, it is because it has always been there. And whether it is the Christmas lights, candles, or the lights within ourselves: It always takes the active decision and action of a human being to make them shine. Everyone can make this world a little brighter.
Be a bulb in the dark to warm and open up hearts.
Today and on any day.

There is something peaceful about a candle and welcoming about small lights, isn’t there. I don’t have a religious bone in my body but you can’t deny the magic of the traditions that shine out those lights at this time of year.

I can relate very well, Geoff. I feel the same about it. It is not about religion but about feeling something beautiful spreading over us and reaching deep inside.

For years candles I lit where just about lighting a room. Now they are more about relighting something inside of me.

Light is symbolic in every form, and for me, especially with candles. I burn them daily, but this time of year, they hold more significance. Thank you for sharing!

That is right what I do too, and I feel what you mean, Jan. The lights we ignite these days have a special energy and power.

We are drawn to light and the hope that it represents. The birth of Christ re-established that light on Earth. You’re right, we individually must share our light to brighten this world and ourselves within. Have a great week, Erika.

Mark said it so perfectly, a lot of the magic comes from us looking again through the eyes of a child. Christmas may mean something different to each one of us but what there is in common is the love that lies underneath it. Thank you and have a great week too, Sylvester.

It is a special love, full of memories and times where the Joy was asking us to feel it all. Even understanding what it meant, even as a child, if only the basics of those we loved and presents, presents, presents. Now with much more wisdom we look back and feel it still but with a much more expanded heart…and still such wild choices of food, still with the eyes of a child…and alas, paying the consequences 😂 🤣
Your home is lit well Erika, that Joy lit up for all to see. Thank you for sharing 🎅🏽 ❤️ 🕊 🙏🏽 🎄 🦋 🎁 ⛄️

You always find the perfect words and convey that feeling of Christmas so well, Mark. Indeed, it is the feeling we recall from childhood. And you made me think deeper. I wanted my children to take something along from that time. Not the hectic, not (only) the presents, but some traditions they may remember and which may provoke to keep up the magic of love during that time. Yes, it is that child that we let shine again these days. The child that only is – as part of the magic around it. Thank you for your inspiring comment, Mark💖

Thank you kind lady. I think it is a balance to know and feel that the world isn’t in a total mess all the time and we can indeed share a lot of love in so many ways, especially at this time, A safety net for a while, holding our memories and sharing that part of us with the Joy of what it means ❤️ 😀 🙏🏽 🦋
