Aren’t we all disappointed in ourselves at times? We think we “have it in the bag”, or we are convinced about how something works out, but then it hits us unexpectedly that we are mistaken. It can make us lose confidence in ourselves.
A few weeks ago, I passed the exam for the first year of my phytotherapy education. It was a tough year, but I cannot blame Corona or any other circumstances. I underestimated the amount of time and effort the many projects caused that I started. I did not have much time for learning, and in addition, the overload which peaked between August and October caused concentration problems. Yes, I passed but way below my potential and expectations. I was very disappointed in myself. Most of all because the part that was not good was going so well before. I was about to lose confidence in myself.
However, I needed to find a way to get out of that destructive mood to find my motivation back to continue and keep the joy for the subject. Telling yourself how bad you did doesn’t change anything for the better. I asked myself: “What would you tell your clients or your children?” I would tell them:
- Nothing always goes perfect, and what is the definition of perfect?
- Life is not a static process. What looks simple and under control today, can be challenged by changing situations tomorrow.
- Your attitude to give the best of yourself is great, and you did your best. Although the conditions made it harder, you made it anyway.
- You know that you have been doing well and estimated tasks well. You only messed up this one task which unfortunately was part of the exam.
- You are not an expert yet, you are still a student, and you may (and shall) make mistakes. Because they provide the best ground for examples where the traps or stumble stones lie.
- A healer is always in a learning process anyway. And one who takes it seriously knows that they never know everything and that there is always growth potential. That is what makes this occupation so exciting.
What is the meaning of failure? To show us how we can become better. And if we are willing to become better, failure is only a way to lead us. It doesn’t mean to discourage or keep us from continuing anything. It can simply give us direction to stay on a straight path to reach the goal. That’s why I don’t like to call it a failure but an experience. We need to be open to seeing the meaning of the experience and the potential for our development.
There will always be things in life that make us feel like we are thrown back in our developments, but this is not the case. We are shown how it may not work and/or how it could work better. Our ego pride is not much help in such moments. It challenges the humbleness it needs to accept what happened and to look beyond and beneath it. And yes, also that is a lesson we are learning. And maybe it is even that ego pride to be overcome by those lessons. Because, once that happens, our humbleness and openness will automatically widen the view, and limit disappointing experiences.
We tend to expect a lot more from ourselves than from others, and we can be so hard and judging to ourselves. But whatever makes you question your assessment of your worldview, your decisions, yand our person, it only happens because you take something seriously. And that is a beautiful virtue. In the end, there are only a few things to do:
Draw the quintessence, put issues at rest, look ahead, and move on!

I know what you mean! I was kind of “gifted” with starting a blog by my publisher and got training sessions. But only when I started blogging on my own, I found out what blogging really is about. A huge part is the interaction with other bloggers. That’s a lot of work and is time consuming but really worth it. And of course, finding out what all you can make of your blog is fantastic.
I am happy we met and I wish you a lot of joy exploring the blogosphere.

An exam is an exam, only to proof, what we should have learned. When you are educating yourself inside the spiritual way, you will need to proof, that you really wish to learn and use this way. If this kind of exam are going like a game, you will not learn much by it.
You did your best that day, dear Erika, what more do you demand? While you know, that you should have been able to manage that exam in a better way, you are still learning, which is wonderful.
How are you, dear friend? Much has been going on, since we talked about meeting. I haven’t been in Denmark yet and I don’t know, when this will be possible either.
Wish you all the best, you deserve that ❤

Oh, yes, absolutely, that is what is left from it all. But my ego pride was a bit puzzled because of the unexpected result. However, I know how difficult the year was for me and regarding that I did really well… haha.
I am good, Irene. Thank you so much for asking. It has snowed a lot and everything looks like a winter wonderland. Regarding the worldwide situation, I am very cautious because I don’t want to risk any infection before Christmas. Otherwise my mom would be alone for Christma.
Yes, so much happened. This year was as challenging as amazing. I could get my whole therapy practice re-organized, including a new website. If you have time, feel free to take a look: erika.kind.com.
I hope you are doing well and settled meanwhile. I am glad you are close to your daughter and grandkids now. What a wonderful Christmas this will be for all of you anyway this year!
Thank you for your wonderful wishes and I wish you the same. We will not forget about meeting… it is only postponed 😊Take care, dear friend 💖

I just tried to visit your website, but they can’t find it or there are problems with it. Sorry.
I do stay cautious too and only stay together with the family indoor. We must hope for a better 2021.
Take care too, dear friend ❤

Sorry, my fault. It is erikakind.com (no dot between the names). That should work now.
I believe it will be much better next year! Let’s hold this thought high and keep being cautious until then.
Lots of love and a wonderful holiday season, Irene 💖

If I lived more close to you, I would get into some treatment there.
Enjoy a beautiful time and holidays ❤

I remember a really great climber saying to me. You only fail climbing if you don’t come down in one piece. Anything other than that is success. And if you fail to summit but come down up in one piece. You come back tomorrow a better climber.

A good example, Gary! That’s the attitude of winners! My first volleyball coach said: Don’t think of the missed ball. Forget it and focus on the next. Otherwise you will miss the next one too. Not pondering about what went bad but what do I learn from it to make it better!

Erika, I keep thinking of the author who was turned down 100 times, but the 101st one gave her or him a try. I forgot his name, but an astronaut kept getting turned down and, finally, NASA said yes on the fourth try. Someone asked what he would have done if they said no again and his response was key, I would send in a fifth application. Keith

Oh, yes, there are lots of such stories which prove that something only doesn’t work when we give up on it. One of those authors was J. K. Rowling (the author of Harry Potter). I love the story about the person who applied for the NASA. Just don’t ever give up!!

Remember, FAIL, means First Attempt in Learning! You are always learning and improving upon your own worth!

Or repeated attempts after it was not gotten the first time… Hehe. We need to put the ego aside and look out for potential of improvement in the seeming failure. Nothing happens to humiliate us but to make us better.

Sometimes we can spread ourselves out too thin and are not able to give the maximum effort to our goals. Sometimes it takes minor adjustments. If we learn from our supposed setbacks or disappointments, then we can put ourselves back on track. As you said, we are hardest on ourselves due to what we expect of and hope for ourselves. The most important thing is to not see failure or defeat but to see opportunity and victory. Great post, Erika! Have an inspiring week.

Yes, that is the crucial point that decides which way we will go. It is about seeing the failure to see the opportunity. I like how you said that. Thank you, Sylvester!

You’re welcome, Erika! When we can take our ego out of the picture then we are even more aware an empowered.

It is so important to get this message Erika, that if things do not go “according to plan” … then an opportunity to learn has just been given to you. That perspective may well become even more important in one’s later life as certain faculties become less efficient. We cannot necessarily learn to improve our natural senses as we age, but we can take advantage of modern medicine where possible and, perhaps more importantly, can plan to work around a known limitation. Even to simply schedule a greater time frame to do a project may be all that is necessary. “Failures” really are simply opportunities to learn and grow accordingly. Great Post. 🙂

I like the example with aging. That’s a good point. Certain things will change and we might not do anything about it but we can find other ways. Like water that is blocked by a dam but the tiniest gap let’s it find a way around it. Failure is nothing bad but important because it holds so many insights about the subject but also about ourselves! Nothing is ever in vain and seeing it that way makes every experience an adventure of exploring life.
Thank you very much, Colin!

Beautifully spoken Erika, our journey does indeed take some amazing twists and turns. I had setup my massage therapy business and was doing a roaring trade within 18 months. And in one swoop due to an illness of my mum, I had to leave it and move towns, all back to square one. Then a strange thing happened, I met the most beautiful lady and fell madly in love, to which it didn’t work out and I was taken head first into my one life fear…to be rejected by someone I really loved. I was a mess but unknown to me then she had given me a gift beyond words, she had begun my path to be set me free of a life of fear and find the one love I had denied myself all my life…my love.
So yes, it is a wobbly old path but it is exactly where our hearts need to go, to be free and to be loved truly. Underneath it all we do indeed find our answers, our self worth and in doing it some crazy marks in our exams…but…the score that our hearts make just gets better and better, and eventually become a master of something we hadn’t even enrolled in…the art of love.
You are doing well dear lady, your words are your journey and you are traveling well, take a bow 😀 ❤️ 🙏🏽 🦋

It is an amazing experience to see that what made us hit rock bottom is actually what lifts us above it again and for good. But only the one who dares to look closer and to look inside himself is able to understand it. The ability to see that what hurts us most is only a mirror of the knife we are holding against ourselves.
Thank you for sharing your story which is a very good example.
You know, I am stumbling all over the place collecting little pieces and trying to put it into a bigger picture. The more pieces I find the more I see that the picture is only getting bigger than more complete… lol!
