A Trip Towards Heaven / #MomentsOfJoy

This Monday, we made a trip to the Jungfraujoch. It is on an altitude of 3454 m/11333 ft. The mountain Jungfrau itself is at an altitude of 4.158 m/13,642 ft. Next to it are the Eiger at 3.970 m/13,015 ft) (you may know that mountain from some dramatic documentaries about groups climbing them in the 1930s, many people died), and the Mönch at 4.110 m/13,474 ft. The photo next shows all the three: on the left (sorry, not complete on the picture) the Eiger, then the Mönch, and on the left the Jungfrau.

But one by one now. Already the ride to the train station Grindelwald Grund was a joy. At one point, we stopped for a beautiful view of the Lungern lake. Here some expressions from the ride:

Arriving at the train station towards the Kleine Scheidegg:

Next, you can see some gorgeous views from that first train ride and the train station the Kleine Scheidegg (which you can only reach by train):

Now the adventure begins. We went on the train to the Jungfraujoch. Half of the time, we went through tunnels through the Eiger that were built between 1899 and 1912. Many people died during the work on the railroad. One can only imagine what it must have been like working there all year long in this dangerous and icy environment with the tools they had at that time. In the middle of that 30 minutes ride, we stopped at the Eismeer (ice sea). A gorgeous view over the Eiger glacier.

Arriving at the Jungfraujoch (“Top Of Europe”)! In the following, you will see pictures taken from “The Sphinx”, the top platform. I can only imagine how impressive that icy landscape must have been decades ago when the glacier was multiple its size from today.

And of course, the Jungfrau:

More views from up there, beginning with The Mönch:

There is also the so-called Eispalast (ice palace). An exhibition hall inside the glacier showing ice sculptures.

And now we finally know where Scrat ended up!

In some way, I felt like traveling back in time. It was a trip from one beautiful world into another within minutes. I hope you enjoyed it!

War echt der Hammer. Wir haben uns dem Wetter angepasst… ist ja für den Rest der Woche etwas unsicher. Aber morgen möchten wir es eventuell in Weesen und Amden versuchen.
