In Love and Light
Erika, while some say we cannot change, we are creatures of habit and influences, as much or more so than genes. The only way we can change a bad habit is to find its instigation and substitute a good one. I have been alcohol free for almost thirteen years, e.g. As for influences, I am a different person today because twenty plus years ago a friend asked me if I knew anyone who wanted to join a Board of Directors for a nonprofit that helped homeless families – I said me.
I use personal examples as we can modify who we are. The influences can be bad or good. Sadly, children who witness domestic violence are more prone to be DV abusers when they grow up, even if they are the victims. So, it is imperative to try to change these paradigms with other influences.
Thanks for sharing, Keith

Yes, many who simply don’t want to make the effort to change something or are afraid of doing it will always use the excuse that we cannot change. But in fact, the developed to the point they are by the way they were thinking and they don’t realize that what they think is a choice. They choose to think they cannot change… and they will be right. You chose to think that you can change, and you were right too! Therefore your example, and as you said, everybody’s example that change is possible (remember my son’s former girlfriend who almost died from anorexia) is so important to inspire others to do the same.
Nobody says it will be easy but it is possible to change our thoughts and in the long run our belief system. The changed way of thinking (as you said by substituting negative for positive thoughts) will become a reflex and reprogram the belief system.
Thanks a lot for this wonderful and important comment, Keith!!

Erika, in the past few months, Neal Peart, the drummer of the rock group Rush passed away. He wrote most of their songs, including this lyric from “Freewill.”
“When you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.”
This supports what you say in your response. If you think you cannot change, then you are choosing not to. Thanks again. I am glad you remind me of the anorexia story. Keith

Exactly! Even not making a decision is a decision. The more aware people are the more they will take responsibility for their actions… or actually they will take more action! Thanks a lot, Keith!
