Erika, it is like staring into the sun when driving the car. Unless you take action – sun visor, shades , etc. – you won’t be able to drive very well. We have to act to see. So, this metaphor works in other facets of our life. Sometimes the obvious cannot be seen.
Using a mathematics analogy, when you don’t know how to do a problem, you should write down what you do know. Think with your pencil. Often, the result will become more clear.

Those are very good comparisons. Yes, when we are so focused on one particular way to make something work or we are waiting for one particular result then we won’t see the little opportunities which open up around us which would lead us exactly there.
As about writing. I can only second what you said here. Through writing we are more dedicated to the subject and go deeper automatically. That way I have givne myself so many answers already.
