The Staircase Shows Up Once You Take The First Step!

Lately, the older of my two sons graduated with really great success. My younger son wasn’t amused that he had to attend the celebration but there was a deeper meaning that we forced him to be there… although we did not know about it before.

My younger son is in the process of deciding which apprenticeship he wants to start. He needs to apply this year in October. He is not someone who likes to go to school and makes big efforts to learn. At least he finally knows a direction of where to head regarding a profession. Now during the graduation ceremony of his brother, all of a sudden something in his attitude changed. He started asking questions about the general qualification for university entrance. The profession he had in mind to learn is chemical laboratory worker. But during that evening he went a step further. He wants to study it and he asked questions about how to get that qualification. He instantly checked the internet about several options like schools and classes. And we found a way with which he not only could get this qualification but which would also provide a foundation from where he could go in many other directions in case he changed his mind.

At one point I said to him: “I absolutely love the direction you think and you will get all support that’s needed. But you need to be aware of the fact that this means you had to go to school for 3 or 4 more years.” His response made my jaw drop. He said: “I want to study chemistry. And I want to find the fastest possible way to get there. If it means going to school then so be it. Sometimes you need to take a different direction than you planned in order to reach your target.” Wow, was that my 14-year-old son who was fine when scratching on the limit?

It made me think of myself. When I started looking for a job last year I did not want to make a career. I wanted to have something I do what I have to do and have my granted salary at the end of the month. One year later, I am working almost full time instead of 50%, I am the direct assistant of the founder, and lately have become part of the management… and I love it! Things changed and something within me started to develop in a direction I had not expected. I let it happen because what opened up within me filled me so much that I could let it flow in all I did. The feedback from the outside world and the chances and opportunities that opened up for me again increased that flow which widened the field even more.

Everything starts with a thought. A thought, that triggers something within. When we are not afraid to let that thought develop within us and follow the little pushes from inside then we make the important first step which gets the ball rolling. That is all that was needed. Now we only need to follow the hints and take given chances. A small trail can turn into a highway from one moment to another and you are riding on the road of your purpose. That way you will come across everything you need for the further journey to even greater fulfillment. Once you experienced this you are not afraid anymore to take the step into a new field. It really is about taking that one step from a thought to the first little realization. You never know what greater purpose is behind it but you need to make that first step in order to find out.

I have no idea if the plan my son had for the evening will be to walk to the end but what I know is that in that moment he may have found the entrance to his highway.

The differences in thinking between your two boys mirrors pretty closely that of my two girls. Not to mention you, me and John Lennon…Life is what happens while you’re making other plans, or something close to that. Good luck to all of us, and may God bless us in the process!

Thank you for this comment. Yes, we are all different and therefore follow different paths. Even our own paths differ with our development. To me life appears like a string of crossroads. You think you found the main street only in order to realize that it was the path to an even bigger road. Blessings!

How wonderful that your younger son now knows what he wants to do and how to get there. It is not easy for teenagers now as the world has changed so much since we were young, so having some direction is a great head start.
Congratulations to your eldest son and to you too Sis! You have come so far in your job and obviously made a huge impression. 🙂

Thank you for all your lovely words here. We both know how great it feels once we finally know clearly where to go to and I am so glad my son has that feeling now too which is so empowering.
I had never thought (and did not even plan it deliberately) that I would ever come that far and it is only the beginning. Awesome!!

First, congratulations to your sons and to you, you must be bursting with pride. Secondly, your post today is an inspiring message to us all to go forward, not be be afraid to go for our dreams. Of course we must be reasonable in the risks, but we will never achieve our goals if we don’t work toward them. Thank you Erika. ❤

Thank you very much, dear Holly! Oh, yes, I really am proud 😁 You are right. I am someone who tries to stay on the safe side and therefore doesn’t like to risk too much but as you said, if we never take the step into the unknown we will never reach new shores! Thank you very much for this wonderful comment 💖
